SMOKERS who can’t kick their habit may find a life-saving friend in the shape of a large glass of fresh orange juice each day, a Dutch study says.
Tobacco raises smokers’ risk of strokes significantly. Now a study in Neurology says a high vitamin C intake can cut the risk of strokes among smokers by more than 70 per cent. Vitamin C lowers the body’s oxidative stress, which plays a key role in strokes.
The Dutch researchers, who followed more than 5,000 people for more than six years, say the benefit comes only from dietary vitamin C — not from supplements.
