Americans will believe anything.

A few minutes ago I was watching movie “The night America Trembled” I thought it is just fiction there is not truth in what movie is depicting. But out of curiosity I googled the name of the movie and this is what I found in Wikepedia:

This is an image of the middle portion of the October 31, 1938 Late City Edition of The New York Times. The headline that is illustrated here is “Radio Listeners in Panic, Taking War Drama as Fact” with a subhead “Many Flee Homes to Escape ‘Gas Raid From Mars’–Phone Calls Swamp Police at Broadcast of Wells Fantasy”. The article is about the hysteria reported after Orson Welles’broadcast of H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds. It makes reference to “thousands” of people taken by hysteria, traffic jams and swamped phone systems from areas as sundry as New York, NY, Dayton, OH, Princeton, NJ, and even as far as San Francisco, CA, and New Orleans, LA.

Re: Americans will believe anything.

because the show was broadcast as if it was happening, if u missed the beginning you woud think it was really going on.

think of it as your usual sources of info today were talking about an attack even from another country, would you not take it seriously? we look at news reports of snow storms, tornados and what nots and believe it, if u saw a news report of a massive tronado headed your way..not knowing it was some movie would u not try to make preparations.

but then..pakistanis believe in green mysterious men helping them in war..remmeber that.

Re: Americans will believe anything.

^ why does Pakistan has to be zabardasti dragged in every possible scenario :smack:

Re: Americans will believe anything.

isnt this a pakistani board?
here we are talking about americans believeing in 'anything'
My point is very relevant to the discussion noting that people anywhere would believe stuff, and the example for pakistan was given because I assume that majority of people here do not know similar held beliefs in burkina faso and lesotho.

Re: Americans will believe anything.

makes sense. thank you for the explanation, i wasn't really expecting any :)

And it actually happened in 1965 war at bridge of River Ravi ,Lahore and many people witnessed that. If one negate that he should negate 1000's of such events and karamats of aulia and buzargana-ideen quoted in hundreds of books by authentic sources.

They also believed about WMDs in Iraq as FOX , NYT,WP,Times were saying so.Not a new thing !

My point exactly, they believed a radio drama as a real attack by Martians , in the day and age when media and sources of information were not so diverse and advanced.
But in this day and age you would expect more rationality , but again I am so naive that I trust in sense of judgment and rationality of humans. My bad.

And many Pakistanis believe that anything bad in their country is always the fault of Jews, Pashtuns, America, India or even Iran in certain cases

Does anyone recall the riot against the US Embassy in Islamabad in '79 over a fallacious claim that the US attacked Makkah?

Re: Americans will believe anything.

X2, neighbouring country okay but martians, come on

Re: Americans will believe anything.

angels more believable than martians?
