I thought that having beards was banned in the US army because beards interfer with the gas masks.

I think beards, properly kept, look very good on a man. Unlike those moulvis who grow beards like pets :p

From what i understand, US special forces in Afghanistan in particular are encouraged to keep beards when in plain clothes to maintain cognito during operations.

Actually it's sunna to keep a well kept beard! It's supposed to be a fist full. Not the type which some individuals keep which you can't distinguish where the beard starts or ends. It's actually quite embarrassing when you see someone on the street and their beard looks like its taken total control over their face.

So these American soldiers got beards, big deal.. has more to do with their circumstances and attempts to gain ‘cheap’ goodwill from the Iraqis and Afghans there attempting to subdue.
I also kinda agree. its also a Sunna and Islamic to be clean and present yourself in a nice and neat manner which for some odd reason, people who grow such beards never really do(This is a general statement as there are some people who are clean and have beards but in my area majority arent!, also I just want to add, there is a segment in our community without beards that are pretty stinky too!) Just go to Jumma Namaz on a Friday and u’ll see the hygiene of many people.. without going into detail, its alarming! Hygiene, clean clothes and presentation are important to a communities health, peoples, image, life etc.. and is in everyones interest to encourage it and frown on people who dont conform to basic standards. Plus these guys with beards say they keep them for Islamic reasons so they should be held to an even higher standard!:halo:

The Holy Prophet :saw: had a huge beard which went almost to his stomach…This is what we hear from those who lived with him…He oiled it, washed it and sometimes perfumed it too…
