American Sniper

Re: American Sniper

And turns out along with being a homicidal maniac your “brave” hero was also a liar.

American Sniper lawsuit: Chris Kyle told lies about Jesse Ventura.

Re: American Sniper

I haven’t seen the movie, only trailers. From the trailers, there are scenes where he is for a moment hesitating pulling the trigger. Then talks about how he is ready to face his God to answer for his deeds, and Bradley Cooper is looking like 10 feet ahead, sort of spacey, almost as if he is beefing himself up/psyching himself up to mentally square with what he’s done, and deep down, he’s miserable with the war and the death and dying, and shooting, etc. I got the sense Bradley’s portrayal of Kyle was a subconscious “I’m going to convince myself these people are all evil, and that this is my job, and I’m doing a righteous thing, so I can deal with the trauma of all this, and man, wish I was home with my family instead of doing all this”. Another scene where he cries to his wife, that he’s ready to come home. Like exasperated with what he’s doing.

I don’t know, did I not interpret those scenes correctly? Again, haven’t seen the movie.

Re: American Sniper

I guess one of the questions the portrayal raises is “Did he really believe that he was killing savages, and what he was doing was right?” or Did he falsely lead himself into believing so, just to take the edge off of the stress that was his job. Remember, he didn’t choose to start this war. He was enrolled in the military and had to go. He didn’t have much of a choice.

None of these soldiers had much of a choice. Many of them have come up sheerly traumatized. And the mental damage is worse on the Iraqi and Afghani side. I guess this movie doesn’t cover the opposite side, and normal routine Iraqis who just wanted to live their normal lives.

Re: American Sniper

Way more oscar nominations than it deserved.

Re: American Sniper

Troops have to rationalize themselves into believing whatever they are doing is for greater good.
The only difference between a soldier and murderer is conscience

Re: American Sniper

Whatever excuses we could come up with…the point is…couldn’t Hollywood find a better (noble) soldier to turn him into a hero? Wow, it took just one movie for the American public to be brainwashed into believing that it’s normal for soldiers to go on a killing spree.

If you can make excuses for such behaviour, then nothing can stop you from making excuses for raping women, killing children, or torturing prisoners. Oh wait, US and Israel are already doing that.

Re: American Sniper

Glorifying a murderer. It’s just your yearly stroking american ego film

Re: American Sniper

I didn’t see the movie, but generally Hollywood is closer to human emotion than any other industry
My comment was in general conduct of soldier in war

Re: American Sniper

hareem01, did you watch the movie?

Re: American Sniper

I broke my own rule which never watch war movie.
I got what I asked for :frowning:
Violence and more glorified violence :frowning:

I had to stop watching at about half time.

Re: American Sniper

I was hoping there would be a human element to all that violence and war as in a typical Eastwood movie. There wasn’t?

Re: American Sniper

Soldiers get training and part of that training is to dehumanize the enemy.

Re: American Sniper

Well what doesn’t make sense to me is where is all the anti-war sentiment we saw under Bush? Most of America wanted the wars to end, this is a big reason why Obama won.

Re: American Sniper

^ come on now… see bellow … love is in the air…

Words “Lesbian,” “Bisexual” and “Transgender” Appear in State of the Union for 1st Time

For the first time since 2001, the State of the Union address.....] " But Obama did say three other words that made history — "lesbian," "bisexual" and "transgender" — marking the first time those words have appeared in a State of the Union address.

President Obama: “That’s why we defend free speech and advocate for political prisoners and condemn the persecution of women or religious minorities or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender. We do these things not only because they are the right thing to do, but because ultimately they will make us safer.”

Re: American Sniper

Which war are you talking about?

Re: American Sniper

Bradley Cooper tho

I haven’t watched the movie yet. I’ve been meaning to. Maybe tonight. Maybe.

Re: American Sniper

“American Sniper is almost too dumb to criticize”

‘American Sniper’ Is Almost Too Dumb to Criticize | Rolling Stone]('American Sniper' Is Almost Too Dumb to Criticize)

The problem of course is that there’s no such thing as “winning” the War on Terror militarily. In fact the occupation led to mass destruction, hundreds of thousands of deaths, a choleric lack of real sanitation, epidemic unemployment and political radicalization that continues to this day to spread beyond Iraq’s borders.

Saw the trailer and some clips, think I will give this one a pass. Watching it would be too agitating.

Re: American Sniper

The article has substance, unlike the movie.

Re: American Sniper

Matt Taibi is an honest journalist. I don’t see.the point seeing the movie.

The irony is Taibi is liberal. And is a voice of reason. While it is fashionable in right wing circles to bash liberals.
