This poll also finds that the people who categorize themselves as ‘Conservative Republicans’ have a more negative view of Islam verses those who consider themselves as ‘Liberal Democrats’. I consider this difference in part because of how much the people in these political affiliations themselves have learned about the religions. While most of my conservative friends have great interest in faith and spirituality, their knowledge base is very focused to their own religion, which leads to misunderstandings.
Survey: Half of Americans Have Favorable View of Muslims

Morning Edition, July 27, 2005 · A poll by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life concludes that 55 percent of Americans have favorable opinions of Muslim-Americans. However, only 39 percent of those surveyed held favorable opinions of the Islamic religion itself.
