I think a recession in America is highly possible...
This seems all the more probable lookin at the value of the dollar falling against other currencies and the move to the Euro as the worlds reserve currency...

If your savings are in the form of cash then undoubtedly there will be a reduction of your wealth in the coming year or two as the dollar continues to lose its value. It is better to invest in a portfolio of stocks, this diminishes the risk that comes from holding stocks of just one company. Ideally a portfolio of stocks of US companies and of the emerging markets would give a nice balance of stability and growth with a rate of return in double digits per annum.

Stocks can be risky in recession. One of the side effect of recession and often one of the triggers is when investors hold their money in less volatile assets such as money market accounts, bonds or T-bills.
Off course there are good deals in certain stock but you need to be very careful. During recession I would only suggest brand name deals that are less volatile such as Microsoft, Proctor and Gamble, etc.
Remember where there is chance to make lot of profit, there is always a higher risk. Depending on your risk appetite you can decide where to invest.

If you are in the US your reduction in wealth is more tied to inflation than dollar value. If you hide you money in an account that gives you 2 to 5 percent interest, you will most probably come out even or on top.
