American affiliated universities in England for Engineering

Friend of mine has this situation, and doesnt know if this is possible or not for him. If you can advise or have any references, please post or PM me. Thank you.

My friend wants to study engineering and eventually become a licensed engineer in aeronautical engineering. (Insha’Allah) He would like to study for a year in England and then be able to transfer credits to the USA. Is this possible? He has a Bachelors degree in another field already, but wishes to do Bachelor’s in Engineering now.

Any suggestions/advice? Thanks.

Re: American affiliated universities in England for Engineering

a university does not have to be american affiliated to be able to transfer credits. I transferred credits from Imperial College and have friends who have done so with unis ranging from oxford and cambridge to Southbank uni and UMist.

the ability to transfer is almost the same as transferring between unis within US. if the course content is similar to the courses being taught at the new university there should not be a problem.

Considering it will be on year and he will be taking foundation courses, I dont see much of a problem transferring those credits at all.

Re: American affiliated universities in England for Engineering

Fraudia,

He has a Bachelors in Business, and now wants to do Engineering. Engineering programs in the UK are 3 years (the ones he has seen), so his concern is, if he does a year there for example, will he be able to transfer here and continue? What if they are Engineering courses? The fact that he is going to do BA again, he should be able to cut out courses just with this Business degree as well, even within the Engineering program in UK, correct?

Re: American affiliated universities in England for Engineering

it depends on which university he's transferring too...he'll have to call the program coordinators over there and ask them which courses are transferrable i don't think all of them will be...i think the obvious courses can be cut out, like the basic ones, calculus, physics, chem, etc...

Re: American affiliated universities in England for Engineering

At the good universities they are 4 year programs. For example, all of Imperial College’s engineering departments offer 4 year degrees, including aeronautical engineering.

Maddy, I have no idea what his grades were or chances of getting into a good uni. (nor do I want to ask, hehe).

I just know that he is thinking of going to Kingston. Thats the only name I can recall from my convo with him.

Re: American affiliated universities in England for Engineering

make sure raggamuffin is not headed to kingston, jamaica :) know wha I mean ?

Re: American affiliated universities in England for Engineering

Things that make you go hmmm.

Re: American affiliated universities in England for Engineering

Kingston Uni, not Jamaica. hehe.

Maddy, is Kingston a not-so-great uni for engineering?

Re: American affiliated universities in England for Engineering

In theory, Kingston has good rated departments for Mechanical, Aeronautical and Manufacturing Engineering.

But overall, Kingston is in the bottom 50% of UK universities, and that overall reputation hurts its graduates in any discipline on the job market.

Re: American affiliated universities in England for Engineering

Oh okay. I'm guessing my friend knows about that stuff since he is there.

He wants to do Aeronatical Engineering there and according to him, they have a good department for that, as you mentioned.

I dont know if reps of uni's are so important if he is planning to transfer here later.
