I think from the concept of discoveries it is important to understand what constitutes a discovery. SOme argue that Columbus deserves the accolades because of the establishment of "back and fro" trade and movementr of people.
Also, don't the vikings claim discovery in like 1000 ad or something?
and why should that really matter? i bet most of the Americans don't even care who discovered their land...
I would give credit for the discovery of the Americas to the Native Indians who were already living in the Americas prior to Columbus's voyage.
However, I have also heard of the Viking theory ... that they discovered the Americas long before Columbus. In fact, I believe they landed somewhere on the eastern coast of Canada.
Anyway, didn't Christopher Columbus actually first land in the Caribbean islands?

Unfortunately the Chinese Emperor's ordered a closure of all sea links after this exploration, regardless of that, the Ottoman Empire was aware of the existence of North America in the 16th Century as well as the fcat that the Portugese has discovered the other route to India. The question is not who discovered North America but, why was there such a lack of interest in exploration and science ata time when Muslim Military power was unmatched in the World.

The Ottoman Navy dominated the Meditteranean between 1500 and 1600. They were slightly technologically inferior to European ships, but had vast numerical superiority. At one point the Venetian navy annihilated the entire Ottoman fleet, but the Ottoman Empire had sufficient resources to rebuild the navy within a few decades and defeat Venice in a naval battle.
Ottoman ships were landing on the shores of Britain even as late as the 1600s to abduct English villagers to be slaves in the Empire. A couple of these raids were even led by English sailors captured by the Ottomans in the Mediterranean and who converted to Islam and began fighting against their formaer nation.
Of course, within 200 years the Ottoman Empire had decayed to such an extent that it needed Britain's military assistance to defend itself against an aggressive Russia.
^ True MS: And prior to that for much of the preceding centuries the Arabs were famous seafarers, who dominated trade in the Indian Ocean. Atlantic Sea Travel helped develop tougher European ships, and don't forget the navigator who helped Vasco De Gama was Arab!
