AMD based Systems

Guys, I have never owned and AMD CPU Based system. From 386 to Zeon, I have always bought or build and Intel bases system for my self. Now that my wife has done some computer courses and getting tech-savy, she is demanding her own box (in addition to the laptop she already have). Basically she want additional machine so that kids stay away from her laptop and don’t play games on it. :crying:

I have decided to build an AMD machine for the purpose for obvious reasons (less $$$ and its going to be just a browse-onlinegames-youtube-MSoffice machine). Anyone who is into ADM machine please see this kit and give your input

MSI K9N6PGM2-V Socket AM2 Barebone Kit - AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz OEM Processor, 3GB DDR2-667 Memory, 250GB SATA II, ATX Mid-Tower Case, 450-Watt Power Supply in Canada at TigerDirect.ca

Price: $259.99

  • MSI K9N6PGM2-V Motherboard - Qty: 1 $64.99
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Processor ADO5000IAA5DO - Qty: 1 $59.99
  • Crucial 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Memory - Qty: 1 $43.99
  • Crucial 1024MB PC5400 DDR2 - Qty: 1 $28.99
  • Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 250GB Hard Drive - Qty: 1 $49.99
  • Power Up Mid-T w/450-Watt PSU - Qty: 1 $51.99

If you think this is not good for home use, tell me why and please suggest any alternative. FYI, I dont want to spend more than 250$

Re: AMD based Systems

have you looked at new solidstate HHD computers? now every one makes them. pretty fast and good price too. 340& for a lap top.

Yeah but if you see my post, I am looking for something that kids can use too. I believe I have to go with desktop !

Re: AMD based Systems

Its 64 bits and you may run into problems since not all applications play nicely with 64 bits.

Re: AMD based Systems

really ??? even on windows ??
But can't he not install 32bit windows on it? We can install both 64/32 bit linux on a 64bit cpu.

alright good point. So which one should i go in 32 bit? (AMD processor that is)

WindowsXP has a special version for 64 bit CPUs which comes with a 32-bit emulation layer. It lets 32-bit apps run in "emulation layer".

** In any case, its better to work with the architecture of the computer then against it. Even though 64-bit CPUs are faster and better for various industries i.e. Video, Graphics, Chess, Gaming etc. I don't think they are worth the extra headache if you just using it for the kids. I would say keep the headache level to minimum.**

*Also try "DeepFreeze" or "SteadyState", if it interests you. Idea is simple, once you "freeze" a "state" of your computer, no matter what happens i.e. kids install junk or virus attacks or toolbars got installed, all of it would be whipped clean as if it never existed.

A closer look at the system on the website you provided reveals that these things are missing:

  • CPU Fan (extra 30-35$)
  • Keyboard + mouse (40-50$)
  • Monitor (??)
  • CD/DVD-ROM (30-40$)

So I assume you have these things already, and will not need to buy them extra.

I always owned AMD along with Intel, and it never let me down. I am a big fan for AMD. 64Bit should not be a problem, if you could get hands on 64bit OS (e.g. Win XP 64bit).

32 Bit applications can still be run on XP 64 bit.

except for CPU fan, I have pretty much everything else at home in my personal junk yard :) ... Will go to Tiger direct tomorrow..lets see!!

Very cool. I've been looking for something like this for my home PC since it frequently gets infected with spyware, and then I end up wasting too much time fixing it.
I'll try the SteadyState first since it seems to be free.

Re: AMD based Systems

**@sky Make sure you have an extra partition where you can save data that you don't want whipped after a restart. All files or folders go back to the frozen state once a computer is restarted and that includes documents and files that you may want later.

P.s. You can mount a drive as a folder in your My Documents. Just makes it a little convenient. **

Re: AMD based Systems

you're gonna have to diss out a little more for the 64 bit OS!
