Amarnath against cricket ties
KOLKATA, May 14: Former Indian Test cricketer and current National Cricket Academy batting consultant Mohinder Amarnath said he was against resumption of bilateral cricket between India and Pakistan.
Amarnath here to give special coaching to NCA trainees, said “India should not play Pakistan as long as there is cross border terrorism.” He was one of the most successful Indian batsman of his times against Pakistan.
Asked about newly-formed Indian Cricket Players Association (ICPA), he said, “I see no validity of making another players association when one already existed. The old one could easily be revived.”
The earlier Players Association called Association of Indian Cricketers was formed in 1989 with many of the current and former players as its members.
Amarnath minced no words when he said that a Players Association is to see that cricketers get the maximum benefit since the span of cricketing life is very small. “But how far will ICPA be able to attain that goal, I really don’t know.”
When asked if ICPA was forming a rift among cricketers with Sunil Gavaskar, Bishen Singh Bedi, Kapil Dev, Ashok Malhotra and himself among others on one side and the likes of Ravi Shastri, Arun lal and current cricketers on the other, he ducked with ease. “The end thing is to see that the game is benefitted.”
He said the cricket board had very good relations with present cricketers and was giving them maximum benefit from the game and he really did not know whether ICPA could get anything more.
“BCCI has done enough for the cricketers. I really don’t see ICPA getting a lot more for them.”
Meanwhile the Board of Veteran Cricket in India Wednesday said it was keen to undertake tour of Pakistan to play a one-day series.
“We are planning to propose to the sports ministry to give us permission to play against Pakistani veterans in a one-day series,” BVCI president Chetan Chauhan told reporters here.-AFP
