I’ll be going to Lahore in a few months and am taking my laptop so that I can stay connected. My Aunts house has a computer and I think that they are connected to the net but I need to use my own computer. What should I take with me apart from laptop and charger to ensure that I can get online whilst out there?
Is the net reliable out there (have never used net there before)…?
What if power goes out? Do I need extra kit to make sure my laptop doesn’t suffer?
Re: Am going to Lahore with Laptop: Connectivity Qns
internet is good in lahore, take high speed wireless from the phone company. when power will be out, your computer will run on the charged battery. Pakistan in top 15 countries who have good highspeed and/or wireless internet availability in major cities.
just watch out from thieves and do not let borrow this from you not even for short time otherwise it will disappear for ever.
Re: Am going to Lahore with Laptop: Connectivity Qns
yeah as some1 said earlier make sure u keep ur laptop safe and also i think there's a schedule of when the lights go out. so once u know the schedule then make sure u dont plug in ur charger at that time just to avoid any mishaps during power interruptions (could be high voltage etc, ) also make sure u buy a converter for ur charger if u need one. make sure ppl back home have a router otherwise take urs and encrypt ur internet connection for sure there.

If power does go out you should be fine for the few hours your battery has remaning but this is where those EXTENDED batteries come handy. Find some on amazon.com or ebay.com (used/refurbished work fine) and this way you can go on for hours if not days/weeks with these spare batteries. I have 3 extended dell laptop batteries and they come handy ALL THE TIME.
Re: Am going to Lahore with Laptop: Connectivity Qns
If u want to be completely free, buy the USB GPRS/EDGE stick from Telenor. Excellent product, high speed and u can keep connected anywhere (car, bed, hills, picnic, etc). Wherever telenor signal is available. Costs Rs 12,700 and Rs 500 per month. I can share 50% charges with u if u agree to transfer it in my name when u leave Pakistan for my further use. You can PM me. visit www.telenor.com.pk
Re: Am going to Lahore with Laptop: Connectivity Qns
just get a surge protector to be on the safe side when your lap's connected to the wall. other than that, if they have dialup, or DSL, or wireless, your comp should be equipped to deal with it all. oh also, take a plug adapter. really really handy.

If you want to use internet cards, they give you instructions on how to connect to their server. It's pretty easy.
Depending on the length of stay, I recommend PTCL Wireless Phone. Not sure what's it called now but last year when I was in Pak I got one of these and it works great, a little faster than regular internet card system. You don't even need a phone connection.
