Alternatives to Hair Color

My mom has a severe allergy to hair dye. Her face itches, swells up and she’s in agony. We’ve gone through peroxide-free hair dyes etc with the patch test and she still is allergic to it. We’ve also tried black mehndi and it’s still the same.

The only thing that works for her is 100% pure mehndi, with shikkai and retha etc mixed in.

I’d like to know:

  1. do you know of another alternative?
  2. Do you know of a website where i can get 100% safe henna color for hair, that you’ve personally used, and know is reliable.

Thanks. Any information would be appreciated.

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

My khala has the same symptoms, she pops an allergy pill Zyrtec I blv and uses Bijin..

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

OMG Bijin, its been ages since I heard that Brand name :)

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

Sehar has it occured to you that she maynot be allergic to the peroxide but something else in the color?? Maybe the artificial color in the dye?

Black Mehndi has artificial color in it.

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

by mehndi you do mean the one that we put on our hands right? But wouldn't that make the hair all red

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

^ Yes it would. Those desi people you see with red hair, thats how they get it. http://picasaweb.google.com/mattndebs/2WorldTripPakistanIndia/photo#5023227152534168898

~Sehar~ apa  I was reading this blog and this person seems to be pretty serious about her Henna. She recommends Caca by Lush.

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

Lush uses Mehndi too in their dyes.

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

Gina - what is Bijin? Zyrtec/Benadryl etc doesn't work for her...we've tried that.

Adrae - i'm certain that is something other than peroxide that causes her allergy cuz we've tried peroxide-free dyes and she still reacts :(

indopak - yeah mehndi gives a reddish tint but thats why you add coffee, shikkai etc to make it more brownish rather than reddish.

Cheegum - thanks for the tip...I've looked at that website...I think i'll give it a try :)

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

Bigin is the name of a hair-dye Seher I've just seen her use it along with zyrtec n it works for her =)

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

my mom has the same problem, she has allergic reactions to the peroxide and ammonia, so she uses "loving care" by clairol

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

omg my mom is having the same problem and now it freaks me out that i grow older i do not want to have the same problem.....

Re: Alternatives to Hair Color

starry night - thanks for that, i think i'll do a patch test for clairol...let's see where that takes us.

Cyme - Same here! I've never had my hair colored, so I think what if I also have a dye allergy? It freaks me out as well :-/
