If one is allergic to hair colour, does anyone have any suggestions what could be used to color hair?
I know of black henna but doesnt this have chemicals in it.
Are there any other natural products out there that people know of?

so I have twice now reacted to hair colour both store bought and from the salon.....and quite severe reactions too......
I did some reading and found a product online that claims it is not going to cause such a reaction. It is called Sanotint Light. Apparently it contains no PPD which is the chemical that is known to cause allergic reactions.
I ordered it and am waiting to try it.
I can tell you afterwards if it made a difference or not.......
meanwhile, in case it doesn't work, I'd like to hear from folks what else is available and what they have tried....

My mother has had bad allergy to hairdye since the mid 90s, and has ended up twice in the ER despite using hair dye that was apparently "ammonia" free and claimed to be natural. So recently, we went to an allergist and after tests discovered that she has an allergy to PPD, which is an ingredient found in nearly all permanent hair dye. At the time, Clairol "Loving Care" was PPD free and readily available at stores, however, I believe they've discontinued the product and now it's available on amazon, but it's a bit pricey.
We've switched over from Clairol as it wasn't lasting very long ~approx 2-3 weeks before it started fading out. Now my mom is using Surya hair color cream which is semi-permanent, claims to be natural but I think also uses synthetic dyes, but has no PPD. It lasts about 3 weeks before she needs to color again.
Black henna contains PPD.

Tried the SanoTint Light product this past weekend.
Worked well.....but my scalp is still itchy......not quite as itchy and irritated as it was with regular colour but itchy nonetheless.
I want to give it a few more days to see how it goes and I will report back.

Try mehndi (henna). People in the asiansubcontinent use it to color their hair effectively. Mix it with coffee to get brown color. It is 100 percent natural. To get black color first use henna on hair for at least 3 hrs and then wash out. Then apply indigo for abt 3hours. You get jet black hair. THere is a website that has detailed instructions. One thing to keep in mind is that you cannot use synthetic dyes after using natural hair dyes like henna and indigo. Henna is avail in any desi store. Indigo should be avail at natural health food store or mehandi.com.

The Sanotint didn’t really pan out for me. Scalp remained itchy for quite a few days and the colour faded within 2 weeks.
I am now using the henna + indigo process and am very happy with it. No reactions and hair is in amazing condition.
