are alternative careers, popular in especially professionals in academia?
for instance, for a tenure track business professional to be a business school professor besides being the ceo of her/ his own organization together with being a well published, successful and credible business person?
same with other fields, practice and theory dealt in, simultaneously by a professional from a knowledge domain be it IT, business, education, language studies, medicine, applied behavioral sciences, law, or social work.
does it happen mid stream in one’s career path when the basic career foundations are well stood?
wo/men who enter such commitments, how do they manage the work load?
is it a familiar trend in worklife, in Pakistani professionals?
how succssful in this model of work life in early 40s?
any articles that someone might have read on this issue?
Pretty much all of my profs did consulting on the side, some had businesses, some were on different foundation boards as well. They were fairly well established in their fields and I believe the side gigs started after they had established themselves as authorities.
It works both ways actually… I know quite a few consultants who ended up pursuing a doctorate and later pursued academics and consulting at the same time.
I sort of did that myself… after my MBA, I started a boutique management consulting practice in business process management… had a few gigs before I got started with my Ph.D. – even during my Ph.D., I worked on several consulting engagements… some through my own company and some in collaboration with my Ph.D. supervisor.
I intend to continue the consulting gigs on a regular basis… the way I see it… two semesters a year would be dedicated to teaching and research while one would be dedicated to either industry research or consulting.
