Allowance

Did you get allowance as a kid? If so, how old were you when you were too old to get allowance anymore? Any parents here who give kids allowance? My dad has given me the responsibility of coming up with a reasonable allowance for my two youngest siblings… 15 year old sister and 8 year old brother. I dont remember getting allowance when I was 8… I didnt have any expenses, so I dont understand the point of giving him any, he already gets whatever he wants/needs from abu or us… but whatever. How much is reasonable? I’m a little out of the loop with how much is reasonable for an 8 year old… five, ten dollars a week should cut it right? And for the 15 year old I’m guessing 25, as she’s in high school and needs to buy her own lunch and stuff. I dunno. I tried asking both of them first, but their idea of reasonable is a little far out there lol. My sister said 50 and brother said 20. I dunno… seems a bit much…

Someone help me out here please! :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Allowance

i never used to use my Allowance

Re: Allowance

my folks used to give me $20 per week when i was in high school but i dont think it wa enough becuz the food used to be $1.50 and the drink will cost 80 cents. That was like 6 years back. Maybe u should find out how much their meals cost.

Re: Allowance

^ how about your mama makes lunch for u

:mash:

Re: Allowance

Yeah actually, I know that more often than not, my sister doesn't eat school lunch, and my younger brother gets free lunch at school and I pack snacks for him for during the day. I dunno, I was hoping to see how much the average kid gets from his/her parents these days. Back in my day, it was MUCH LESS. :D

Re: Allowance

well my mom did try to do dat for a few days but then the food turned cold by lunch n most of the time i had to throw it away cuz it didnt taste too good. So we sticked to the allowance.

Re: Allowance

Ok cool, so 20 for the week for the sister. Seems ok, four dollars a day hehe :D

Re: Allowance

i think $10-$15 is good for an 8 year old..
and about 25$-$30 for the other one,
my lil bro is 9yrs old, and i think he gets like $10 and hes happy with it..

Re: Allowance

ok cool, I just didnt wanna end up giving him too much cuz I'm afraid he'll spend it all on chocolates and candies but then again, that's what 8 year olds do best hehe.. ten it is then :)

Re: Allowance

never got any :hehe: but got wateva i needed or wanted :k:

Re: Allowance

At the age of 8, it’s not about fulfilling needs or wants, but rather teaching him how to handle money and to determine the value of it. Start with a small amount and teach him good spending habits. The sooner you start instilling good habits into kids, the easier it will be for htem in the long run.

At the age of 15, it’s slightly different as she might want things that your parents dont or can’t provide her. How much does a typical school lunch cost? Does she get it from the cafeteria (a fixed cost) or does she go out? When I was in HS, lunch was $1 a day, 25 cents or free if you qualified. If her school has that prgram then, $30-35 is reasonable. But if she has to go outside the campus to buy lunch, then that might get more expensive.

I think i started getting an allowance in high school (dont think it was earlier…cant remember)…and it actually stayed the same til i got married :pagli:

Re: Allowance

this reminds me  There s a discussion going in Holland about what Sara said and sex education :smack: Now they want to introduce SE in the 3e or 4th grade

anyway, lunch money should be sperate from allowance
for an 8 year old, not including the lunch money, 5 bucks tops. And motivate them to save it (pakistani people can try; putter save it for your shaadi ! )

Re: Allowance

Why isn't your dad giving them their allowances??

When I was 15, I was getting about 10 or 15 dollars. When I was 8, I didn't have an allowance. And those were always lower rates than my counterparts at school. I think I managed pretty well with 10 or 15 dollars. It depends what you're making them pay for.

Some folks give their kids an allowance which is meant to cover their lunch. With maybe a few extra dollars that they can set aside to buy something they want. The whole goal is to teach them money management, saving and spending wisely, and so you don't have to deal with the "I want this toy".

We took lunch from home every day; at least I did. My little sister sahiba came along and got way more - she would often buy lunch at school, which used to be a luxury for me. So, the money I got, I ended up spending mostly on gifts around Eid and the Holidays and Birthdays, etc. I always felt bad that they would give me money when they were tightly managing themselves, so I tried to buy them useful things they could use in the kitchen, etc. And then once in a while, I'd buy myself a lipstick.
