Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

I personally 100% agreed with Border. The T20 is killing cricket. Let the Leauge level madness continue if it can sustain the same level of interest as NBA/NFL does in US (the model that cricket copied). There will be some changes in the number of leauge matches in each country and tournament eventually. But leave T20 for leauge tourney’s. It adds no value on Int’l level. Keep Test and ODI in classic way.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

as a tamaashaaii, i love T20's because it's short, it's action-packed and the best of each player comes out in this format of the game. i just LOVE it! :)

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

May be majority of viewers love it, and that is why it should continue in league. On Int'l level, its not as exciting.
Besides, I like the last comment in which border points out that once the game in T20 is tilted for one team, it rarely goes the other way. Unlike the very nature of ODI format that has entertained the world for last 40 years.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

that i agree with but the shear excitement in a fast-paced game to achieve the target unmeasurable. :)

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

But on the flip side, it becomes less tactical and more blind hitting. The art of fast bowling is affected badly in this version and has little to no impact. Lame spinners are hailed for their containment.
This is T20 but not cricket. Because its going 180 of what is cricket, a super technical game (only comparable to Tennis and few sports).

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

Border is just BSing. T20 is just the way cricket is evolving. The 'classic' way you talk about, will die out. I mean, we live in 21st century. The pace of life has changed. Who has time to play/watch a game that goes on for 5 days? It suited well for the leisurely lifestyles of 18th century or 19th century or even maybe 20th century.

And it is not really true that there are no game swings in T20. Only someone who has not watched any amount of the T20s will say something like that. Case in point, the T20 final between India and England. The game was firmly in England's control and things changed in 16th over with a couple of wickets. That is why it is exciting and popular.

Finally coming to changes to bowling. You've got to adapt your bowling. About 15 years ago, you could hardly find any spinners playing for England, Australia and West Indies. Now spinners are part of repertoire for all test playing nations. You make adjustments as the game evolves.

When the west changed Hockey from natural surfaces to artificial surfaces, am sure there were many who were nostalgic about the 'classic' ways. But it don't mean a thing. You just move on and accept it. Eventually the long version of cricket will be ODI and short version will be T20 and it will happen at all levels. You just gotta deal with it.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

what you love is de-maar-saaRay-chaar.... batsmen having a go at every ball :)

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

isn't that so much fun for everyone? :)

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

Its kiddie style fun... for Cricket, its all about Test cricket which really 'tests' cricketing skills IMHO.

hmmm…:hmmm: to, kia merii to T-20 kii bhaiNs gaii paanii meN? :frowning:

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

Looks like you have not watched a lot of T20 either. Granted the T20 format favors the batsman, but a skilled bowler can still set up a batsman. You should watch Malinga bowl the death overs in T20. What Test cricket requires is strategic thinking and stamina. Just because of the pace of the game you get to see technique and technique should not be confused for skill.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

^ You have your opinion, I respect that, I like to see the bat-ball fight in longer term where batsmen are not required to attempt hit (almost) every ball.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

^ or batsmen are required to hit one out of twenty balls for a single? I see Misbah walking towards the crease. Run for cover.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

I prefer Test cricket.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

ONLY if you got stamina or time (5 days [Test matches] or 10 hours [ODI] as compared to just 4 hours [T-20]). :)

i can't sit for more than 4 hours to enjoy or have the time for it! :)

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

I think T20 is already having an effect on Test Cricket. There are more games now with an outcome than there were before T20.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

Earlier you mentioned Test cricket is technique but T20 is skill.

Actually good technique is skill. The style of a pure Test batsman cannot be matched by the hathaudi style batting of T20. The straight drives, square cuts, leg glance, cover drive.
The flight of a spinner in Test cricket cannot be matched by the guy who bowls flattish and does not give air to the ball.

The fury of a fast bowler with 4 slips and a gulley cannot be seen in T20. Placing a forward short leg and inducing a catch - see some Eknath Solkar catches.

T20 is cricket without a soul.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

I would have agreed with you if there were no straight drives, square cuts, leg glance, cover drives, flighted bowlers ( Muralitharan played in IPL ) or slip fielders in T20. The fact is, those shots are still played, those bowls are still bowled and field setting changes in response to situations.

As for the flattish spinners, T20 did not cause that. The flighted spinners were already a dying breed before T20.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

The Eknath Solkar part should have been next to the flighted spinners section. The editorial staff is off duty, and will move said text to said area upon their return.

Re: Allan Border calls for international Twenty20s to be dropped

Don't argue. Just agree.
