Heard this term after a long time in a drama. Mother was saying to her pregnant daughter ‘aisi haalat main khane ka khayal rakha karo, allam ghallam mat khaya karo’.
Now whats actually this allam ghallam? Was that a food item or something not suitable for eating and used as food by people during some troublesome time (like famine, etc).

There are two type of food, the slow poison that pundas eat is called Satwik and those not eaten by them, made by onion and garlic is asatwik. In ancient time even a gaze of non-brahmin caste could pollute their food :D, by ancient time, I mean before Independence :)
Maleccha is different, Only Brahmins and Baniyas don’t eat meat, rest were always meat eaters, like Thakurs and Rajputs and other castes :), this also depends on the region they live. kasmiri pandit’s diet included fish and lamb. Bengali brahmins eat fish
