All Time Best Literary Heroine

There is no doubt that literature has a very active hand in shaping generations; especially when it comes to the movement of gender in current society.

Who do you think were some heroines that changed the ‘face’ of women in history.

Jane Eyre?
Edna Pontellier (ducking tamatars)
Bella Swan (ducking bullets)

:hehe:

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

Asghari of Deputy Nazeer Ahmed's 'Mirat ul uroos'? :D

:nahin:

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

You guys have to tell us WHY!!! :snooty:
Especially since I’m zilch for south asian lit.

All Time Best Literary Heroine

Modern Day literary heroine: Katniss Everdeen…I think she’s one of the best, well rounded literary heroines to have come about recently. She has shown that a young woman CAN challenge the status quo, and be strong yet vulnerable at the same time.

Classic literature: I know it will sound cliche, but I have to go with Scarlett O’hara. She was raised to be the face of the genteel, “kept” women, but in reality, she’s a independent fire ball who could get the job done better by herself than 10 men could put together :hehe:

She needed no one, but at the end day, just wanted to be loved. I think she really showed women that sometimes we really are our own worst enemies :frowning:

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

Asghari is the ultimate portrayal of Naik Parveen, SughaR lady who didn’t waste time in playing with dolls like her elder sister Akbari. She managed her sasural well and was able to built a big haveli in Khanum ka bazar.

Recently read that such characters were there in European literature of 19th / early 20th century especially novelists like Daniel Defo (who is otherwise famous for Robinson Crusoe, but google tells that he also wrote novels like Roxana, the fortunate mistress) :hehe:

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

So we're all obsessed with good girls after all.

Khatti have you read the final book in the Hunger Games trilogy?

All Time Best Literary Heroine

Yes, I have...it was my least favorite of the three

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

I was all about Everdeen as well and then I read the last book; OMG the crying made me want to slap her!

I have to think about my choices; I need a run down of what I've read.

Off the top of my head I want to say
Contemp Lit - Hermonie Granger
Classic: Mina Harker / Jane Eyre

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

OMG MUNIYA! You did not suggest Bella! As fun a read as those books were, Bella was the least valuable component!

Jane Eyre all the way. :snooty:

Would you throw Lizzie Bennet in the mix?

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

Oh Hermione.

I like Katniss too.

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

I'm not a fan of good girls, I love strong, rebellious, flawed yet fun loving character so my all time favourite heroines are:

  • The Wife of Bath from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales

  • Becky Sharp from Thackery's Vanity Fair

  • Beatrice from Shakespeare's Much A Do About Nothing

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

:hehe: I’m nothing if I’m not true to my nature. I had to throw Bella in there; however I am not the least bit in her favor. I thought she was a terrible role model.

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

Scarlett O'Hara!!!!

Modern Day - Tris Prior from Divergent .. she's so badass I love it! :D

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

I wouldn't call Jane Eyre a good girl. She's a rebellious smart-mouth outcast from the beginning, and gets beaten until she's bloody in the first chapter for it.

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

So being a rebel disqualifies you from being a heroine?
I thought she was pretty good at breaking the mold and making things work for herself.
I did find her overly nosy at times and cutting a bit to much red tape for her own benefits.

All Time Best Literary Heroine

Scarlett O'Hara is nowhere near being a good girl either!! She's mean, selfish, spoiled, ignorant to a fault, immature...yet fiercely resilient

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

Nancy Drew :D

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

No, I was disagreeing with the comment that we're picking good girls.

I'd guess most rebels are better heroines.

Re: All Time Best Literary Heroine

aha!!
my bad ....

I forgot the context of the prior posts.
