New Member Education Certification
As the chapter officers responsible for enforcing either the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Association and University of Kansas policies regarding new member education and hazing, we hereby certify that the following will be adhered to our chapter’s new member education program, pre-initiation and initiation ceremonies.
Policy Statements on Hazing
Interfraternity Council Policy
The Interfraternity Council policy on and definition of hazing is provided by the bylaws of the Constitution of the University of Kansas Interfraternity Council, Section 8, sub-point C.1. Initiation and Pledgeship/Associating Rules, which states:
“No form of hazing shall take place in any fraternity chapter house, on University property, or on any off campus property. Hazing includes, but is not limited to, any action, activity or situation which recklessly, negligently or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health, welfare or safety of a person, creates excessive fatigue, mental or physical discomfort, exposes a person to extreme embarrassment or ridicule, involves personal servitude or substantially interferes with the academic requirements or responsibilities of a student. It is presumed that hazing is a forced activity regardless of the apparent willingness of an individual to participate in the activity.”
Panhellenic Association Policy
The Panhellenic Association policy on hazing is provided in the bylaws of the Constitution of the University of Kansas Panhellenic Association, Article XIV. Hazing, which states:
“All forms of hazing, pledge day and/or pre-initiation activities which are defined as hazing shall be banned. Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Such activities and situations include creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; wearing publicly, apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and jokes; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; late night sessions which interfere with scholastic activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with the regulations and policies of the educational institution.
National Pan-Hellenic Council Policy
The National Pan-Hellenic Council policy on hazing is provided by the Joint Position Statement against Hazing provided in the National Pan-Hellenic Council Handbook. Hazing is defined as,
“ …Any action taken or situation created that involves or results in abusive, physical contact or mutual harassment of a prospective Fraternity or Sorority member; and that any such action is considered hazing, whether it occurs on or off the Fraternity or Sorority premises, campus or place where chapters or prospective members meet: and that hazing has also been described to include any action that results in excessive mutual or physical discomfort, embarrassment or harassment; that such activities include, but are not limited to paddling, creation of excess fatigue, physical or psychological shock, morally degrading or humiliating activities, late work sessions that interfere with scholastic activities and any other activities inconsistent with fraternal law and regulations and policies of the affiliated educational institution and federal, state or local law…”
The University of Kansas Policy
The University of Kansas policy on and definition of hazing is provided in the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities, Article 22. Section A, Items 1 and 2, which states:
“An offense against a person is committed when a student: (1) Threatens the mental or physical health of another person, places another person in serious bodily harm; or uses physical force in a manner that endangers the health, welfare or safety of another person; or willfully, maliciously and repeatedly follows or attempts to make unwanted contact with another person. (2) Engages in hazing of another person for the purposes of initiation or admission into, affiliation with, or continuation of membership in any organization operating under the sanction of the University.
By our signatures, we understand that these policies apply both to individual members and the chapter as a whole, and that failure to comply with these policies will result in judicial action by the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association and/or the University of Kansas against the chapter involved. Judicial action could result in the chapter and/or its member(s) being probated, suspended or expelled from the University of Kansas. We further certify that this statement has been read in its entirety to the general membership of the chapter, and all new/associate members. This statement is to be submitted to the Interfraternity Council Office, or Panhellenic Association Office immediately upon completion.

We have included the State of Kansas Statute on hazing for your information, however the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association cannot enforce this statute.
Kansas § 21-3434
Prohibits intentionally encouraging another person to perform an act, which could reasonably be expected to result in great bodily harm, for initiation purpose.
@ X2 . This is the news from my city and state which made me open this thread :
Teen Fatally Hurt At Initiation
So may be it is allowed by this fraternity ?
Re: All those fraternity and sorority
so now lets talk about the initiation. The initiation is a ritual , same ritual that every other member of the fraternity has gone through, it is supposed to be meaningful, somwhat esoteric and focuses heavily on the principles of the fraternity.
The type of crap that pledges went through is not part of initiation, and is strongly dscouraged. It still happens but is not accepted and any chapter involved in hazing will have its charter withdrawn by the national HQ, and booted off by the university as well.
thats a lapse of logic on your part, do you always do things you are allowed?
when someone runs a red light and hits someone else, as he able to run teh red light because his city allows people to run red lights?
So there are rules and there is enforcement, there are rules against drunk driving, yet we have druk driving related deaths, because of people’s irresponsible actions and not following the law.
There are people hurt and killed in fraternity hazing, even in my own fraternity, not at my chapter but a different chapter. Now the initiation itself has nothing to do with it, its the idiotic and dangerous roughhousing that immature idiots do that resuls in tragedies.
but initiation and hazing are not the same thing.
Cafe kaaa mahol bara serious kiya hoa hai ![]()
sawal guandum jawab chana.
My post is specifically asking about initiation. I did not use H word , did I ? ![]()
Tell me about it . All I wanted was some juisy frat boy and soro girl stories. And all I am reading are lectures about how hazing is illegal or not allowed. ![]()
Re: All those fraternity and sorority
we all did dumb stuff for fun, in highschoo, in college, grad school, as part of an organization or as just a group of friends, so fi I am asked some fun, dumb or crazy things I did hanging with the fraternity guys, i can probably write a long list but it had to do with our personal choices and not some sort of mandated action by the fraternity at a local or national level.
Fraternities get a lot of bad rap due to limited knowledge and stereotypes that exist.
Yes but the issue is that people are using those words interchangeably.
hazing is not allowed, and hazing is not part of initiation.
initiation ceremony/ritual involves no hazing
Look a guy at my fraternity’s chapter in a diff state died due to alcohol poisoning. I did not drink any, none of the guys with me were forced to do anything. Remember my statement, initiation is a ritual, the same ritual that every single member has to go through.
so people do things on their own against fraternity rules, and something completely out of the initiation ritual that results in these tragedies.
wait a sec, you just said that the story about the death of a student prompted you to start the thread. so you read news of his death and the reaction you had was to go and hear about juicy stories?
wow..
Re: All those fraternity and sorority
btw :) we dont have to be serious, i just wanted to correct some common terminology mixup :)
Re: All those fraternity and sorority
I was never interested in fraternities or sororities.
What is the advantage of being a part of them anyway?
Re: All those fraternity and sorority
social calendar, leadership development, networking
these come to mind right away
first of all a really good social life, group involvement in everything from sports to community service in college.
after all the bad rap is set aside, you will see that greeks have a higher graduation rate than non greeks, 70% vs 50% os so. its a big enough difference that we either have to say that ppl who were more likely to graduate anyways join fraternities, or that there is some support system in place that results in higher graduation rates.
2% of americans were/are in a fraternity or sorority , yet
Over 85% of the student leaders on some 730 campuses are involved in the Greek community.
All but eight U.S. Presidents have been fraternity men since 1825 when the first social fraternity was founded. Today, 76% of all U.S. Congressmen and Senators are Greek.
Of the nations 50 largest corporations, 43 are led by fraternity men and sorority women.
Approximately 85% of the top executives of Fortune 500 companies belong to a fraternity or sorority.
Re: All those fraternity and sorority
My brother is part of a fraternity that didn't have an initiation ceremony like that, and they also don't allow drinking. If you're caught drinking (even if you're legal), you're out of the frat.
Re: All those fraternity and sorority
hey kewl, what fraternity is he in?
I know many local chapters have gone dry.
and i some cases the unis are dry and thus fraternities are dry as well.
