the diameter can be very small. !
how small are we talking about?

well depends on the technique you use, it may be in the range of 1 to 4 feet, while in the horizontal windmill you will be talking about 10+ feet dia and that too in whole circle! (360 degrees)
Re: All my engineers + physicist + serious Geeks
very very intelligent point, Sagar bhai, I am working on vertical windmill, due to two reasons, its cheap and very efficient and it doesn't need a pointer tail for wind direction, and since it is directly connected to the shaft so we can get maximum rotating power. It is efficient even at 7 miles wind speed... and moreover we do not huge space since the diameter can be very small.
I request you to kindly share your experiences!
Yes ATA Bhai I recall reading about this verticle axis windmill with catenary shape blades that are effective at low wind velocities from all directions.........surprisingly invented by a Canadian Engineer/Scientist of Indian origin,
However I would check the torque output compared to the conventional horizontal axis windmills that need gearbox......and a tail to keep them pointed into the wind.........

Here you have to go in reverse direction for a complete model development (SLD)!
How much power you like to generate from the generator?
for that you need to know the RPM of that generator to which it give you required output!
Design a generator which can generate low voltage but more current (P= V x I ) ... (you can use step up transformer later to amplify voltage)
The most important thing is while developing a rotor is the Frequency! (for Pakistan f = 50 Hz, and 220 Volts) ... The formula to get the f=50 is
f = (P/2 x N / 60) Hz; where P = number of poles and N = rotor speed...
e.g: if f=50, P=4, ==> N = (50x2x60)/4= 1500 Cycles
so N = 1500 (RPM) which is rotor speed, so you need 1500 RPM speed windmill!
Can you generate this from 7-15 miles wind speed ? ;-)
will complete later, gtg
Re: All my engineers + physicist + serious Geeks
If you use gears and stuff than ?
Re: All my engineers + physicist + serious Geeks
^-- sheesh ;-)
ps: yes, we can increase the speed by using series of gears :-)
Re: All my engineers + physicist + serious Geeks
did you see canals in pakistan would water at that speed enough to rotate a some thing? off course to create power?
Re: All my engineers + physicist + serious Geeks
^-- Other than Karachi, we have Canals, and yes canal's water force can also be used to operate small generators as well, use some smart turbine fans, ...
For Karachi, we have Sea, and sea waves can be used to generate electricity as well...
Pakistan has every thing, but need some sincere and devoted people to work...
sigh... but we have now Zardari and NS... ... may Allah protect Pakistan!
Re: All my engineers + physicist + serious Geeks
nah i wont blame leaders for every thing.
We may get into an argument here but laziest creatures on this planet is a pki engineer.
You wont believe what I have heard. Army is dying to get image processing professional, can't find in pakiatan??????
One time army had trouble making system which could transfer live image from unman plan to earth ????
Can you believe that ???????
holy macro , if I was mush I would have deported all eng from pakitan!!!!! period!!!
Re: All my engineers + physicist + serious Geeks
Well ... engineers living abroad are also dying to serve Pakistan! ... but...
Some time come with me to NED, I will show you the projects NEDians have made, but they were trashed in library only! ... we really need some sponsors!
In mid 80 Nedian made first Pakistani solar Car, in 90's Nedian made 12VDC car, and list goes on... but where are these efforts and results?
But solute to Mr Musharraf and Dr. Ata-Ur-Rehman sahibs for their great rehabilitation works
anyway... leave it ...

Do Not be disappointed so soon ATA BHAI!
Your project can go forward Insha Allah!
first question I have about your windmill project!
Have you checked what the average wind velocity is on the beaches some distance from Karachi where these windmills could be installed?
if not then please get some NED students to set up anemometers and get readings over a period of two or three months........:)

Some times we do feel disappointed, but thanks to Allah I am the person who is never hopeless, I trust in Allah and I love my nation and my country, ... we are future of Pakistan and Muslim umma't... so just work hard with sincerity and for all!
so am not disappointed and always ready to do anything for Pakistan! Pakistan ka mujh par bohat qarz hay, ussay marnay say pehlay chukaana hay bhai!
and about NED... hmm... its been year I finished my BE from NED, so have really contacts reason being abroad! ... but I can go and contact any time, cuz I will still have many Dr and Professor who know me!
For Karachi, ... I have to find out the average wind speed, but I guess it should be around - +10 miles, but again depend where exactly you are living, it will be more across the sea areas and less in populated areas, but there are ways to use our windmill accordingly! ... however I am keeping all aspects in mind ! ...
For just clarification, my windmill is for individual use, and it will be generating around 2-5 KVA of power! so the average person can afford it!
PS: I guess we need to introduce ourself, I will ask those guppies who are interested, please introduce yourself about education, job type, location and ages (in the form of 20+, 30+, 409+...90+) no need to disclose exact age though :-D
This will help me discussing in details :-)
Re: All my engineers + physicist + serious Geeks
wow, now share the knowledge asap :-p
btw, read this, some basic and useful information:
It confirms my this post:
