Aljazeera voted fifth best global brand

Tuesday 01 February 2005, 3:14 Makka Time, 0:14 GMT

The brand now ranks alongside global giants like Nokia

Aljazeera has been voted the world’s fifth most influential brand in a poll of branding professionals that gave the top slot to US iPod and computer icon Apple.

In the survey of almost 2000 advertising executives, brand managers and academics by online magazine Brandchannel, Apple ousted search engine Google from last year’s top spot, but the surprise to many will be Aljazeera’s entry into the top five.

“With all the news from Iraq and Afghanistan and the ‘war on terror’, a lot of people are really tuned into the news, and the major news sources have a western bias,” Brandchannel editor Robin Rusch said. :rotato:

“I think people are tuning in to Aljazeera and looking at its website because it does offer another viewpoint. For the global community, it’s one of the few points of access we have to news from the region with a different perspective.”

Rusch recognised the professional nature of the magazine’s sample could affect the results of the survey, but felt, nonetheless, the Aljazeera brand now ranked in terms of impact alongside giants such as Nokia and Starbucks.

The annual survey asked respondents to rate the impact of a particular brand on people’s lives. It did not attempt to quantify its financial value.

Coca-Cola, the US soft drinks behemoth that regularly tops polls of brand equity value, is nowhere to be found in this year’s global or regional top five lists.

Re: Aljazeera

It's a slap on the face of Fox and skunks.

Re: Aljazeera

If anyone thinks AL jazeera is completely biased, think again. Most countries have a problem with the news station including both arabs and the west. Its athorn in the rear for many and theyve tried to stifle it a few times. Watch control room and it’ll tell all. :k: Bias is the last thing comes to mind.

Re: Aljazeera

I have seen it. great documentry

Re: Aljazeera

biased it is, but any less so than fox or cnn?
people oppose it mostly for its graphical coverage of war and violence. while that may be a petty tactic to attract viewers, it has helped encourage peace demonstrations the world over.

Re: Aljazeera

You're silly if you believe that Aljazeera doesn't take one side more than another.

It is also losing millions of dollars and there are talks to privatise it which may change it's entire face and how it functions.

Re: Aljazeera

How many times have u heard them be critical of qatari monarchy? none...which makes it biased.

Re: Aljazeera

:salam:
Does Al-Jazeera report news? or just plain propaganda. One more question did Baghdad Bob get the job with them or Al-Arabiya?

Al-Jazeera=Al-Jahaliya=National Inquirer.
:wsalam:

Re: Aljazeera

UTD and Verizon, How many times you actually watched aljazeera? Do you guys understand Arabic? This is another example of how US Govt and Media trying to brainwash it's poeple and portraying Aljazeera as the "Bad Guys".

Re: Aljazeera

^^ I read it everyday their english tabloid version. Plus guppies fill the void with copying and pasting the rest of "interesting news" here.

Re: Aljazeera

Exactlly these people cannot understand arabic and they saying the channel is rubbish ?

The only section they can judge al jazeera is on their website which has an english section so when they try to say al jazeera blah blah anti US they can comment on website not TV channel because they have no clue what is being said.

Re: Aljazeera

^ that was my point.

Re: Aljazeera

If someone lives in 3rd world dictatorship, does it mean that they aren't qualified to comment on living conditions and policies of the capitalist west?

Re: Aljazeera

The problem is Al-jazeera english website is nothing like the channel. They’re two different mediums, run by different people. The managing editor of the website is a former BBC journalist, Joanne Tucker.

Anyways, heres an example of the differences they have;

ps- The channel is way better. :k:
