Rescue teams rush to Algeria
International teams are arriving in Algeria to join the desperate hunt for survivors of a huge earthquake that has devastated the north of the country. Hundreds - perhaps thousands of people - have been trapped under collapsed buildings since Wednesday evening’s tremor. Powerful after-shocks hitting the capital Algiers and surrounding area persuaded many people to spend the night in parks and open spaces. An interior ministry spokesman said on Friday that the death toll now stood at 1,117 while nearly 7,000 are thought to have been injured. “Unfortunately we have not finished establishing these increasingly tragic figures,” Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia told reporters as he visited the earthquake zone. Algeria has begun three days of national mourning, but there will be no pause in the rescue effort. As the BBC’s Jonathan Charles reports from Algiers, there is no time to grieve for the dead.

i saw this dreadful tv clip, they have been airing it repeatedly on CBC. This one Algerian lady, perhaps in her mid-30s, being comforted by a few individuals. i am not certain how many of her family members she lost - she keeps screaming over and over again 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon'. Absolutely dreadful. May Allah Bless the souls of the deceased and the living with peace.

Yet the only muslim country I heard that has send aid is Egypt....France, Germany and China has send their rescue team to help look for survivors.....Can't other muslims countries help their bros and sis?
Death toll has reached over 2000....there is little chance of survival for others ........

Why should Muslim countries do anything to help their brothers and sisters? What's so wrong about wanting to waste billions of dirhams/rupees/riyals on constructing palaces, hotels, military budgets, or - as in the case of our thousands of lovely Arab emirs and sheikhs - lavish vacations, on personal jets, to Europe. Who cares about one thousand, or even ten thousand, dead Algerians ? Are they rich? No. So they won't receive our support. i was ashamed when i saw a British team organizing their search equipment (sophisticated sound-detection equipment), at Heathrow airport, getting ready to leave for Algeria. Where were our great Muslim dictators during that time - perhaps languishing inside their numerous palaces, counting their gold.
ps- Sorry for the overdone sarcasm...i just saw some pictures of the victims from the earthquake and feeling a bit bitter that Muslim countries are the first to proclaim noble Muslim principles, but the last ones to act when the time actually arrives to put action before words.
