Alfalah Bank Tournament in Sri Lanka

44 extras: The 2nd top-scorer in NZ. The Paki coach must have some after-thought. :)

If my memory serves me right, Miandad set a deadline of one year for this young team to grow. Still two tournaments passed by, one won, one lost. Why start losing hope now? Thousand miles journey starts with one step.

You're right. But why take one step forward (tight line and length at Sharjah) and two steps back (This tourney?)

Please don't talk about recent WC. It showed our experienced players pathetic performance(except of Wasim, Rashid and Anwar). With fairly balance side(strong bowling and batting), talented players, Pakistan got booted off in the 1st round from the World Cup. Comparing that team with this young team is lame. I admit giving 44 extra runs doesn't justify at all but these young players have never been put in this position before. So be it this time; and let them learned from their mistakes.
ummmm..I am not losing hope. I was only wondering what he'll have to say for himself when he's asked the question about extras. I don't care how or where you came up with the idea of me comparing this team with the one that played in WC, because I didn't compare them in the first place. Maybe you need to go back and read my post carefully.

The only thing that I would like to point out is that I do recall him emphasizing the role extras play in winning or losing a match. So, its pretty amazing for me to see such a high number of extras in a low scoring game, given Miandad's philosophy.

Why blaming coach and manager for the loss? They are doing a perfect job; and better know than you do.

The coach and manaher know their cricket better than me. Sure. I never claimed I knew better. Whats your point? Or are you insinuating that i can't have an opinion because i am not a coach or a manager?

oh yes. I certainly do.

1999-2000 Coca-Cola Champions Trophy - 3rd Match

Now, anyone know what's Pakistan's next assignment and when it starts?

The Pakistani bowling attack consisting of akram, akhtar, razzaq, azhar n saqlain gave away 47 extras against NZ in the 99 WC!
Pak gave away 42 runs in the 92 semi against NZ!!!
its not that big a deal!
its part of the game.....and it'll take time for this team to get better!!
u learn from ur mistakes!

Xtreme,

Although I get what you're saying with regard to not necassarily needing an aggressive opener, Fleming's example is a bit different.

It was not only Shabbir's line that let him leave them outside off, but also the fact that they were chasing a low score (a cushion) on a dangerous low scoring wicket (need for extra caution).

I still maintain that if Hafeez is going to be used as a wall (which is a good thing), it will only pay dividends with an agressive bat at the other end in the long run. (Nazir-type aggressive, not Afridi-ish).

Shoaib Malik may be a good option to draft at the top if he's up to it once Inzi returns.

Dude, this is a new team. Hold your breath and have a glass of water. Why freaking out after losing one tournament? This is just the beginning....

Maybe you should read your own post. This is not the same WC team, which Miandad and Haroon talked about. Remember, team management is coaching a team, who ain't aware of that much International Cricket. Wait for team to reach Pakistan; I'm sure Miandad will have his thoughts about the team's performance.

The team will take time to grow. Guys, who made mistakes will learned from their mistake. This is a learning process and a time to learn. Actually, in my view, it happened in favor of the team as they lost the match 'cause they are in the beginning stage of their training process, and now familiar how is it feel like to lose the tournanment.

Sure, you can have different opinion but why expecting overnight results from Coach, Manager and team?

Why don't you calm down and think before you make such statements? Does Sami bowl no balls and wides every game?.
oh yeah, defianltly and in a big way.

Overall a successfull tournament for Pakistan, even though they lost, but they didn't go down without fighting, I am very satisfied with the current team's process, with Shoaib, Inzi, Saqi coming back later, it will be a force to be dealt with.
Defintly Pakistan were underdogs going in to the tournament, but they played really well and ended being the best batting lineup, 3 highest first inning scores, 3 player passing 50.
Losing Shoaib was a huge blow, but Sami was amazing, he will be a great bowler one day but unfortuantly he had no support, Kaneria bowled well but never looked threatning, Razzaq and Shabbir couldn't do anything.

Though I don't think an agressive opener is needed for Pakistan but on these pitches of Dambulla, one of the openers had to play agressive, Hafeez still has very much to learn as far as opening the face of the bat is concerned.
But in inexperienced of Pakistani team showed and the better team won on the given day.

Yes definetly a successful tournament. I think we have a great a team right now and the players just need some more experience and exposure to world class teams.

but opening remains a problem for Pakistan and this is what concerns me. Hafeez to be seems to be way out of sorts and I don’t think he can be a successfull opener as he has many problems in his technique. Whenever the ball comes to him, he seems to be in two minds and ends up edging the ball to the slip or the wicket-keeper. Yasir Hameed looks to be promising young cricketer which good technique while Faisal Athar should have got more chance to play. But I think Shoaib Malik was the real success of the tournament and plus point for Pakistan. This guy has gained a lot of confidence in his batting and is very useful in the middle order.

Razzaq needs to be given a break because I don’t see his bowling doing any damage to the opposing batting line up and he is just not a good enough batsmen to keep him in the team just for his batting. Sami will be a very good bowler, but he really needs to work on his wides and no-balls. Extras play a very pivitol role in every game and he can’t afford to give away so many extras every outing.

Im looking forward to the next tournament with 3 mathes against England. Inshallah Pakistan will do well! :jhanda: :bhangra:

well genius, I am not freaking out. The crux of my original post was abt extras. I dont even have to defend my post for it appears only you have a problem with it, and just about everyone else and their sisters understood the post. Why be so defensive and take my post out of its context? I dont know where you are coming up with the idea of freaking out and what not. I only wish we had the ignore option installed on this forum. sigh

aved would always divide the total number of extras by six to convert into the number of overs bowled extra and say look..we're bowling this many overs extra and criticise the line and length of the bowlers.** I wonder what he has to say for himself now.**

Again, they bowled better line and length in Sharjah, which suggests that its not a problem of being new to the cricket, and that the bowlers are capable of bowling to a good line. 44 extras in the final...just sloppy bowling perhaps. Ever think of that?

i think he can stay out a while longer. No need to bring back the seniors. Especially now that the team is starting to shape up.

thanx. Can’t wait for it to begin. English bowlers (renowned for their line and length) and English pithces will really test our batsmen, and as they say will seperate men from the boys. i am really very enthusiastic about Yasir hameed. i hope he doesn’t let us down and becomes a prominent member of the team at number 3 :k:

First of all, I never took the context out of your post. If you don’t seem to understand my views or want to impose an impression that everyone agrees with you except me, well then tough luck. :hehe: There’s a ignore option available. Where didn’t I mention about extra runs? You talked about Miandad and Haroon what would they say now; and I told you, don’t expect overnights result. By losing one tournament, it doesn’t mean the young team won’t learn from their mistakes. Sharjah and Dambulla pitches are different according to the conditions. Have you thought about that? Team players are new, young, and it does take time for them to learn.

Hello, and welcome to my ignore list. Enjoy your stay.
