Alfalah Bank Tournament in Sri Lanka

Inzamam-ul-Haq, Shoaib Akhtar and Moin Khan in the list of 25 probables. Training camp begins on April 23. Don’t start jumping on conclusions. It’s just a report. Nothing has been finalized yet.

World Cup flops called for training camp

KARACHI: Hardly have two months passed since the Pakistan team’s debacle in the World Cup that the selectors have recalled Inzamamul Haq and Shoaib Akhtar, two of the biggest disappointments in the tournament, for the training camp being set up in Lahore for the Sri Lanka tour.

‘The News’ has learnt that Inzamam, Shoaib and even former captain Moin Khan feature in a list of 25 probables that were to be named on Monday for the training camp which begins from April 23.

However, indications are that the National Selection Committee headed by Aamer Sohail and including Shoaib Muhammad, Farukh Zaman, Saleem Yousaf and Shafiq Ahmed were unable to get approval to release the probables list from the Chairman of the Board, Lt. General Tauqir Zia until Monday, which is why the delay has occurred.

Infact if there is a way that the rebuilding process of the Pakistan cricket team does not receive a severe setback at so early a stage, it is that Tauqir Zia puts his foot down and blocks the recall of the two failed World Cup stars to the national camp.

A development every Pakistani cricket lover wants to see after what happened in the World Cup and after the much proclaimed promise of the Board that it would start rebuilding a new team for the future sans the tried and tested stars who have failed in recent times to deliver for the nation.

The general consensus is that when Pakistan fared so badly in the World Cup and before it in various tournaments with all the seasoned stars present, what harm would it cause if Pakistan were to lose in the future matches but with a young team.

“But it is unlikely that the Chairman will not approve their recall for the training camp. As it is difficult to visualize the Chairman disagreeing with the selectors choices at so early a stage,” said a PCB source.

According to him, besides Inzamam, Shoaib and Moin, the 15 who recently went to Sharjah, Farhan Adil, Shabbir Ahmed, Kamran Sajjad, Babar Naeem, Imran Farhat, Imran Nazir etc feature in the list of camp trainees.

The national selectors will announce the touring side for the triangular series in Sri Lanka starting from 10th May from amongst the camp probables at the end of the month as the team has to leave on 4th May for Colombo where it will have short conditioning camp.

Interestingly so far no logical reason has been given out by anyone including the chief selector for including the names of Inzamam, Shoaib and Moin at so late a stage for the trial matches being held in Lahore.

In the trial matches, as expected Inzamam who could not cross a single double figure score in the World Cup in 6 innings showed form to score 89 runs, while Shoaib in his two outings had spells of 10-55-2 and 5-17-0.

He bowled only five overs in the second trial match involving him as he broke his spikes and didn’t have a replacement boot so he could not bowl again.

Moin interestingly was tried in the first trial match as an opener but till Monday had not got a big score in any of the trial matches.

**A lot of questions surround the recall of Inzamam and Shoaib for the trial matches as the inside word is that they were invited on the insistence of captain Rashid Latif who feels their presence will strengthen the batting and bowling for the tougher assignments ahead.

But another side of the story is that Rashid has not been involved in the entire selection process for the trials at all and this has been done entirely by the selection committee and infact the Pakistan skipper has decided to let the selection committee and coach pick the 15 for the Sri Lanka tour without having any say in it at all.**

The recall of Moin Khan for the training camp is another intriguing decision and there are questions being asked is this a move designed purely to pressurize the captain?

I think Imran Nazir, Inzimam ul Haq look to be strong candidates for the Sri Lankan tour. Not sure about Shoaib though, he needs to perform his usual best in domestic level to gain a place in the team, just like any other player.

where is saeed anwer?

where is saeed anwer?

UMAIR316,

Why Imran Nazir? How did he perform in last 12 months?

Inzi didn’t even showed up for PCB whites, Shamo was missiing…
he must lose 50 pounds

Re: where is saeed anwer?

Yeah Inzi cameback in the next match and hit a brilliant 79.
Form is temporary and class is permanent.
he is one of those players who doesn’t need to prove any critics why he is so good.

Imran Nazir has done decently but not great. I don’t think the selectors will be looking for just their recent performance in domestic cricket.
Imran Nazir under Miandad’s coaching was a gem couple years back.

Sigh, finally Shoaib Akhtar aka Chela of Tauqir Zia returns back. He hasn’t been talking trash lately. If Akhtar doesn’t pass the fitness test and trials, he won’t be selected in the final squad for the tournament.

Inzi and Moin Khan weren’t drop out 'cause of Aamir Sohail. It was Zia’s decision.

P.S, he also reduced the 25-man list to 21 for what he justify to save the rebuilding process of the team.

I wish good luck to the youngsters. Hopefully, they’ll come upon our expectations.

Inzamam, Moin snubbed for SL tour camp; Shoaib returns

KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia used his authority on Tuesday to save the rebuilding process of the senior team when he dropped the senior players from the list of probables invited to the training camp for the triangular series in Sri Lanka.

‘The News’ was informed by PCB sources that the selection committee had sent a list of 25 probables for approval to the chairman, who omitted the names of senior batsman Inzamam-ul-Haq and former wicketkeeper Moin Khan and reduced the names to 21. Speedster Shoaib Akhtar was the only one of the eight senior players axed after the World Cup to be recalled to the camp in Lahore.

New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan take part in the triangular series from May 10.

“The chairman made it clear to the selectors and coach Javed Miandad that Shoaib should be given a strenuous workout and if he doesn’t show the required form and fitness he should not be considered for the final squad,” the source confided.

There’re strong indications that Shoaib is unlikely to make the final squad unless he shows superlative form and fitness and changes his attitude. He had a disappointing World Cup and on returning home his showing in the domestic and trial matches has seen batsmen caring two hoots about his reputation as a demonic fast bowler.

“Shoaib may learn soon that he’s yet to be forgiven for letting the nation down in the World Cup with his irresponsible behaviour and form and he still has a long way to go before making the team for Sri Lanka,” the source said.

The selectors had recalled Inzamam, Shoaib and Moin for the trial matches in Lahore, and the consensus was that that decision was the first step towards reversing the rebuilding process of the Pakistan team which went satisfactorily in Sharjah. The new-look team, which had three new caps and five other recalled players, went onto win the quadrangular tournament also involving Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Kenya without stars like Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Saeed Anwar, Inzamam, Shoaib, Shahid Afridi, Azhar Mahmood and Saqlain Mushtaq.

Pakistan captain Rashid Latif said he was looking forward to the tour to Sri Lanka and his real job would start in the camp. “I’m ready to work with any player(s), but would like the best possible 15 to go to Sri Lanka,” he said.

The source said that Tauqir had omitted the names of Inzamam and Moin because he felt since they had done a lot for Pakistan cricket it would be unfair to invite them to the camp and then drop them for the final team. “The chairman’s view was that it would serve no purpose to recall these seniors when the rebuilding process has started and they should be allowed to play more matches in coming months to get back into supreme form,” the source stated.

Even Shoaib, the source said, would face a stiff competition for a place in the touring side as the selectors and captain were more impressed with the form and ability of Shabbir Ahmed and wanted to try him out in place of Muhammad Zahid in Sri Lanka.

Chief selector Aamer Sohail said that their aim was to ensure continuity in the process of giving more chances to the younger players. “We’re trying to build on our success in Sharjah although we know we’ve a long way to go. Shoaib has been recalled as he still has a future,” he added.

From amongst the 15 who went to Sharjah only Zahid has been dropped, while Abdur Razzaq, who is currently playing for Middlesex, will join the team in Colombo.

  • Probables: Rashid Latif(Captain), Taufiq Umar, Mohammad Hafeez, Faisal Athar, Yasir Hameed, Yousuf Youhana, Younis Khan, Faisal Iqbal, Naved Latif, Misbah-ul-Haq, Farhan Adil, Abdur Razzaq, Shoaib Malik, Danish Kaneria, Qaiser Abbas, Umar Gul, Mohammad Sami, Shoaib Akhtar, Shabbir Ahmed, Mansoor Amjad and Jaffar Nazir.

I would say a good decision made by Tauqir Zia. Inzi should get atleast couple months off. Its only been a month and a half since Inzi played in WC, and I don't think his form would be changed.

I would definitly like to see the following players to tour Sri Lanka.

Rashid Latif, Yousuf Youhana, Younis Khan, Abdul Razzaq, Muhammad Hafeez, Muhammad Sami, Dinesh Kaneria, Faisal Iqbal, Mizbah ul Haq, Naved ul Hasan, Shoaib Malik, Imran Nazir, Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul, and Taufeeq Umar

jupiter009,

Thank you very much for posting info about fresh faces of Pakistan Cricket Generation.

Al right homies, the training camp has began.

Training camp gets under way

LAHORE, April 23: The national cricket training camp to finalise Pakistan team for the next month Sri Lankan tour started at Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday.

Out of 21 players 16 reported at the camp on the opening day. Faisal Iqbal, Yasir Hameed, Shoaib Malik and Umar Gul were scheduled to join the camp on Thursday while Abdul Razzaq is in England where he is playing for Middlesex in the county championship.

Pakistan team manager Haroon Rasheed said that Umar,Yasir, Faisal and Shoaib were absent on Wednesday since they had to attend a reception for their department PIA in Karachi.

Haroon said that the camp would continue till May 1 while the teamwill leave for Sri Lanka on May 5.

Imran Farhat should have been selected after his great performance at the tryout
Why would you have a try out if you are just going to disregard the results?

so why exactly have they included Shabeer ahmed when his bowling action is supect?

Probables

It seems like the new selection committee is just as bad as the old one in regards to jerking players around, look at what they keep doing to Mohammed Zahid. One minute he's on the team and the next he's gone. I agree that Imran Farhat should have been on the team. I don't think Faisal Iqbal should be there because he wasn't so great at Sharjah but I doubt he'll ever be let go of with his high connections. Personally I think that he and Taufeeq Umar are so slow that they should play Test cricket. My ideal opening pair would be Imran Nazir and Mohammed Hafeez but Imran Nazir shot himself in the foot by not accepting the invitation to participate in the tryouts. God only knows why! Well I just hope that Shoaib Akhtar comes back because I want to see him open with Mohammed Sami. I'm also very happy that Abdur Razzaq will be joining the squad in Colombo. He had a little bad spell, but so did everyone else. He's an amazing player and Pakistan is stronger with him. Well good luck to the boys in Sri Lanka!

Westsidepaki

P.S. Just wanted to say hi as a new comer to the the board. Hi.

Welcome abroad, westsidepaki

Miandad focuses on players’ weaknesses.

Miandad working on players’ weaknesses

LAHORE, April 24: **Pakistan coach Javed Miandad has said he was emphasising to ensure neither his batsmen chase the wide balls nor his bowlers send down wayward deliveries. **

Talking to Dawn, during the national training camp at Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday, Miandad said it was the sole area in which Pakistani cricketers were lacking. The camp is in progress to pick up a 15-member team from 21 probables for the three-nation tournament in Sri Lanka scheduled from May 5 to 20.

**While explaining the way of removing our batsmen chasing wide balls Miandad said that he had confined the pitch area to three feet only. Every batsmen was bound to follow only those deliveries which pitched in the three feet area.

Similarly, he added, the bowlers had to pitch the ball in the three feet area, while bowling maximum near from the first wicket. Miandad claimed, once his students had taken command on this their performance would be raised hundred percents. **

He pointed out that daily session of five hours in the camp was proving helpful in improving the stamina of the players. Miandad said that he was against long training periods and preferred that the players maintain themselves for cricket during off days.

Miandad said that he would be more happy if a final team for the Sri Lankan tour was announced as soon as possible. “It would be better to focus on the selected lotinstead to care for extra players,” he pleaded.

While replying to a question, **Miandad said that he was not facing any problem with paceman Shoaib Akhtar. The coach said that he knew how to handle cricketers.

“Like a father who is familiar with the habits of all his children and accordingly knows how to deal with them. A coach also knows the habits of his students and hase different ways to deal with,”** :k: :k: :k: Miandad added.

Whatever Javed Miandad thinks, let him do all the work… but i think Imran Farhat shud b given a chance… Lets hope for the best from these youngsters… It will b hard for them to perform in tough srilankan wickets but lets hope for the best:jhanda:…

He is a great player but probably in practice matches and nets....he has been given enough chances and he didn't prove himself....so that should be all for him

wow nice thread good job PT.. :k:

anyone knows how much willow tv is charging???

$99 is too much for a poor soul like moi :frowning:

but we dun have to worryr about teaser is heree :smokin:

so who won the tournament? :-)
any updates?

It hasn’t even started yet.

hey westsidepaki
welcome bro,,, i just got on here myself too

Also, do any of the Canadians out there know if the tournament will be on Canadian Bell Expressvu satellite?
Also Miandad sounds great in the way he is dealing with Shoaib. Despite whatever people say about Shoaib, he is a great player with massive potential and whatever his faults may be he is still a game winner. I think that paired with Sami our pace attack should be top notch for many years to come.

well there are a few members on this forum who have the tendency to make pakistan winner before the start of ANY tournament. that’s why i ask
