Alexendra in India

What legacies he left behind?

Are there any tribes / people calling themselves descendents of Greek army alongwith Alexandra? (like is the case with Arab affiliation in sub-continent)

Re: Alexendra in India

alexander never entered modern day india

especially with huge nanda army,he had to stop his conquest of world

Re: Alexendra in India

Does that mean Greek army passed through those areas, which are now in Pakistan?

Re: Alexendra in India

The Kalasha people?

Re: Alexendra in India

from what i’ve heard, by the time he reached the indus valley after all his years of conquest, his army was a mini-town, made up of people of all sorts of ethnicities from the places he had been through - not just soldiers, but an entire economy of traders, cooks, prostitutes, wifes, kids etc. the top officers were greek, who looked down upon the macedonian soldiers (even though alexander himself was macedonian but educated by the best in greece). who in turn didn’t think too highly of the persians. it wasn’t one cohesive culture or tribe to have stayed together and maintained an identity as alexander’s soldiers after he died abruptly. allegedly of malaria. :hehe: welcome to india :\

Re: Alexendra in India

Yes I kinda remember hearing this. Even their religion and culture is quite different from other nearby areas

Re: Alexendra in India

I heard that Alexandra died because he couldn’t digest Palla fish of river Indus… :hmmm:

BTW nice points queer. I had a misconception that Macedonia was another name of Greece or a part of Greece.

Re: Alexendra in India

Dun know about India Be He Entered Pakistan Through Wakkhan Corridor I Think

He left Kaalashi People Near Chirtal..........I Was There 4 months Ago it was Awesome

They got a quite rich culture and they are very good people too well it depends how u treat them

Re: Alexendra in India

Did he spend enough time in India to personally leave behind a "legacy"? His army was tired and almost mutinied after the war with Paurava (Porus). His former army general Seleucus invaded Punjab and lost to Chandrgupta Maurya and formed alliances with him. Alexander also left behind soldiers who integrated with the local populace over time.

Greek and Buddhist philosophies "merged" and integrated. There was also a significant impact on art. It was more Greek style.
Don't the Kalash people of Pakistan claim to be descendents of the Greek soldiers ?

Re: Alexendra in India

Where is Wakkhan corridor?

I heard that Jehlum (Pakistani city and a river) got its name after Alexandre's horse.

Re: Alexendra in India

Yes. He did not relish the prospect of tangling with the huge army of the Nandas

Re: Alexendra in India

Where was the state of Porus? Eastern Punjab?

Re: Alexendra in India

Yes. He did not relish the prospect of tangling with the huge army of the Nandas.

Re: Alexendra in India

Not sure. Will look for more info. What little I found...
The capital of Porus is located between the rivers Jhellum and Chenab in Punjab. This location is also the home of the Punjabi Khatri caste who migrated to India after independence.

Re: Alexendra in India

So that might be Sialkot and Faisalabad areas.

Re: Alexendra in India

Could be some tribes of Pashtuns, and kailash people.

Re: Alexendra in India

Yes he fought against porus, and probably was injured in Multan. His army was tired after their battles on our side, that's why they were reluctant to go towards India.
