PCB honours record-holding Aleem Dar

LAHORE, Jan 11: Pakistan’s Aleem Dar, a prominent international umpire at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Elite Panel, was honoured by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for officiating a record number of international games, here on Thursday.

In an impressive ceremony, the PCB Chairman Dr Nasim Ashraf honoured Aleem with a cash prize of Rs 100,000.

The chairman said the PCB, under its policy of recognising professionalism and excellence, acknowledged the success that Aleem had achieved in his career as an international umpire of global repute, adding that this example would set precedence besides being a source of motivation for other adjudicators to emulate Aleem.

Aleem, having officiated a record 37 Test matches from Pakistan and 75 One-day Internationals (at the Sub-continent level), thanked the PCB for acknowledging his feat, saying he attained the position with the grace of Allah The Almighty. He added that hard work and constant focus on the task always gives one good results.

Aleem made his one-day umpiring debut in 2000 in a match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at Gujranwala. He supervised the first Test in 2003 between Bangladesh and England at Dhaka.

Within one year after his Dhaka appearance, Aleem was elevated to the ICC’s Elite Panel.

He also stood as an umpire in the 2003 World Cup, two ICC Champions Trophies, held in England (2004) and India (2006), besides supervising the Super Series between Australia and World XI in 2005.

Aleem, due to his fine performance at the highest international level, has been nominated for the ICC Umpire of the Year Award in the last three years – 2004, 2005 and 2006. He has also played domestic first-class cricket for Lahore and Allied Bank.

Pakistan is represented by five umpires at the ICC level and 10 umpires at the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) level, Aleem is one of the best and top-ranked umpires in the ICC elite panel as per rating.

In a recent correspondence with the PCB, the ICC Umpires and Referees Manager Doug Cowie acknowledged, “Aleem is going very well in his Ashes series with plenty of focus on him; he handles the pressure very well now and he is becoming one of our senior umpires.”

Former Test umpire Khizar Hayat, currently acting as the PCB Umpires Manager, with other umpires Siddique Khan and Mian Aslam, also attended the function.

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

He is one awsome umpire. :)
If he was a gora, he would be considered better than that Aussie gay guy.
Its great to see this umpire coming from land of Shakoor Rana and Khizer Hayat. :D

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

lol @ shakoor rana. Comeon man so you still think that incident had nothing to do with Mike Gatting's own behaviour?

The aussie gay guy Simon Taufel i still think is very slightly better than Aleem Dar.

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

he is indeed a breath of fresh air among many gallay saRRay huay umpires of the past such as Shakeel Khan, Jayaprakash, and Darryl Hair.

One piece of advice for Aleem would be to stop explaining why he didn't give out to bowlers. In the Ashes series I got a feeling from Shane Warne's post appeal antics that he did not respect Aleem's decision making. Warne was completely different when he talked to Bowden who I think is a weak umpire compared to Dar.

Aleem should let the bowler, no matter how big the name, know that he is the boss when ti comes to adjudicating and he needs not explain the reasons.

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

^ I agree.

Aleem is definetely an excellent umpire. I have not seen any desi caliber in last 30 years of his calibre. :k: Hi accuracy is next to Taufel.

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

Dar did not explain why he didnt give anyone out. I remember the incident you are taking about when Warne appealed and Dar made some gestures and commentators thought Dar was telling him the ball was going away from the stmps. But after a couple of more replays and more balls it clearified that Dar infact was not telling him where the ball was going but asking him to move away from the pitch.

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

And the nice thing is that Taufel (turns 36 on 21 Jan) and Dar 38 are both very young and could be around for another 15-20 years

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

LM, I figured that out before the commentators did. My comment was a basic observation overall. Warne had been showing a lot of curiosity over the umps decisions lately. I think he did it with more confidence against Dar.

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

This is the video you guys are talking about. I think it does look like Aleem is explaining to Warne that the ball hit Strauss’s bat, although it could also mean that he’s telling Warne to move to the side.

Ofcourse you can also tell from Warne’s face, how dare this paki…

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

yep cheegs, both these appeals are a good example of what I am talking about.

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

But Dar was right on both occasions. the first one esp. was a very good decision, many umpires would have failed to spot such a faint inside edge and the second ball hit Strauss a bit high on the pads

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

I wish somebody had a video of India vs West Indies match in Goa played some years ago.
The Umpire (I forget the name)...took his hand out to give the batsman out and subsequently changed his mind and started scratching his head with that hand.

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

^ LOL. The batsman mustve had a heart attack.

Re: Aleem Dar honoured by PCB

lol at Some1...hahahaha..would love to see that :D
