Alcoholic beverages and your health

So a friend told me that drinking a glass of beer everyday helps with kidney stones. Also, taking brandy for colds is known to be quite effective. We also know that drinking a glass of red wine everyday can help reduce heart disease.

Then we have the Nyquils and such that contain alcohol, some in greater percentages than alcoholic beverages.

So, I have 2 questions:

  1. Is the alcohol used in medications a different type that is allowed Islamically?
  2. Is alcohol that can actually treat medical conditions still haram?

Post freely please. :@:

Re: Alcoholic beverages and your health

The amount of benefit these beverages provide can be attained from other things too. It's not that one glass of beer is good for you...it's just a controlled amount, it is probably going to harm your liver like a can of soda would.

It's the same way people say green tea has benefits, or cranberry juice.

Re: Alcoholic beverages and your health

So are you saying that green tea is bad :naak:?

Re: Alcoholic beverages and your health

Re: Alcoholic beverages and your health

1- No if it is to be taken by mouth. Ethyl Alcohol (Ethanol) is used in medicines which are to be taken by mouth. Some cough meds may have up to 10% Ethyl alcohol.

Many side effects or drug interactions can occur with Ethyl alcohol.

(For Antiseptic or preservative purpose, isopropyl Alcohol is used- Sometimes Methyl alcohol-Kacchi Sharaab- is found in home grown alcohol which can cause blindness or death)

2- What medical conditions?

Alcohol is not used to treat medical conditions. One condition "Alcohol Withdrawal/ Delirium Tremens' can be theoretically treated with alcohol.

But there are other ways to treat that without causing further health problems.

Alcohol has no real strong medical benefit.
