alcohol in toiletries/perfumes

does anyone have any idea what the ruling is on alcohol in toiletries and perfumes? im going to buy soem gifts for people in pakistan and if they see the alcohoon on the ingredients …what do i explain to them…after all most people say its ok…

Re: alcohol in toiletries/perfumes

I have never ever seen anyone in Pakistan who has had a problem with the alcohol content of colognes / perfumes. If you know for sure and are 100% guaranteed that the family you'll be buying gifts for has a problem with alcohol in perfumes then just buy something else. Otherwise you do not need to be worried one bit.

All perfumes (real and parodies) sold in pakistan have alcohol content. The only visible exception is the small bottles of Itar you can buy from vendors outside mosques on fridays / eids. Those by the way smell too f'n good!!

Re: alcohol in toiletries/perfumes

do u get intoxicated?
there is alcoho lin some cleaning solutions as well, are they haram?

Re: alcohol in toiletries/perfumes

Peace All

The reason for no contention in Pakistan for using alcohol in perfume is because most of Pakistan is based on the Hanafi interpretation, which subclasses alcohol in two categories. Haram and Najiz. Wine is both, because it contains the fermenting elements and biomass and will go off in time, but pure alcohol is actually a germ killer and sanitiser, but for consumption it is haram but it is not najiz for application.

The other schools do not have this distinction and thus in Middle East you will see companies who make perfume that are mostly oil based and avoid alcohol and in places like Pakistan you do not.

Therefore if someone wears clothes that have wine spilt on them then that is not allowed, but with perfume that is based on ethanol it is acceptable according to Hanafi madhab.

Re: alcohol in toiletries/perfumes

Okay ..i think this has been discussed many times before.

Alcohol consumption/digestion is haram...not its usage for other purposes.

Re: alcohol in toiletries/perfumes

Perfumes/Cologns (with alcohol) are permitted. Reason:
Because it soon evaporates after you spray it and you're left with chemicals that have longer lasting essence, with no ethanol/alcohol left behind.
