Alcohol in Food

I need some clarification on this subject matter.

Many Western Cuisine use Alcohol either Wine or Beer in preparing food.

For example, many pubs serve Beer Battered Fish and Chips or if you go to Italian Restaurants many of their sauces, they add wine to it.

Is it Haraam to eat those food putting aside the Halaal aspect.

For example, Beer Battered Fish and Chips. Is it Haraam to eat that?

Re: Alcohol in Food

I would say it's haraam, yes, as it's explicitly stated that the aforementioned food items contain alcohol.

If you're in a restaurant, you can kindly ask them to not add alcohol in preparation of your food.

You can also rudely ask them the same, if you dont mind spit battered fish and chips.

Peace TLK

Do you own a restaurant by any chance?

:)

From what I remember the ruling is that ... the forbidden things in large quantities are also forbidden in smaller quantities. (I don't think they consider whether it makes you feel "tun" or not in the ruling)

Re: Alcohol in Food

Absolutely Haram
A drop or an ocean, quantity has nothing to do when absorbed consciously, in addition "Haram" is not the food but a willful act of defiance of "Amer-e-Rabbi"

Re: Alcohol in Food

ok thanks for the clarification....

How about homeopathic medicines. All of the homeo medicines (liquid) use alcohol as a solvent. 4-5 drops are usually used per dosage.

Re: Alcohol in Food

caring about this is silly. alcohol is haram because it makes you intoxicated. nobody's going to get in the slightest bit intoxicated off beer battered fish & chips.

Re: Alcohol in Food

^ No no no, even the slightest drop is haram! So you feel that it would be OK to even have a small drink as long as you don't get drunk?!

Re: Alcohol in Food

beer battered fish & chips or alcohol-based tinctures are not small drinks.

well who decides by what amount will a certain person become intoxicated? and why is it a traffic violation when you cross a red light, even where when your are extremely cautious and do not ram your car?

Re: Alcohol in Food

silly comparison: running red lights isnt allowed because there's traffic coming in a contrary direction, therefore doing so is risking collision. yes, if it's the middle of the night, one could foreseeably run a red light, but if everyone ran a red light every time they thought it was clear it is inevitable that statistically the number of crashes is going to go up because more people are taking a bigger risk. there is NO RISK of intoxication involved in eating beer battered fish & chips, wine-flavoured sauces or alcohol-based medicines. a person could eat beer battered fish & chips every day for a year and never become intoxicated.

put this into perspective: if you go to a restaurant which is serving meals which include as an ingredient beer or wine, presumably this restaraunt is also serving alcoholic drinks, yes? whether you ask for them to leave alcohol out or not, your money is going to them, therefore your money is helping them promote haram lifestyles and helping push society in an non-islamic direction. avoiding anywhere which sells alcoholic drinks is a far more sensible interpretation of alcohol being haram than avoiding foods which simply use alcohol as an ingredient, which is pointless.

rather then getting into complications what Maroush say does carry weight and discussion of even a drop (if you know its their) is haraam and big sin wont reach any conlusion. A religion is make things easier and simpler not opposite.

Not everyone becomes a chain smoker overnight, nor do you become a drug addict overnight, nor due you become a social and heavy drinker overnight. Dont take my word for it, just read what the doctors have to say and various testimonies on NHS and other websites.

That's why Islam says there are some benefits in it, but the harm outweights the benefits, so stay away from intoxicants.

Well it's not pointless but do agree on the first point.

point is you are no one to what conclude what constitutes haram. When something is forbidden, it means its unconditionally forbidden. Even if you crash your car in somewhere or not. your cant break the law. what is so damn hard to understand? stop interpreting islam

alcohol, along with hookah tobacco etc, is haram because

a) it is physically poisonous (it is physically harmful to our bodies)
b) it is mentally poisonous (it increases the distance between oneself and allah)

neither of these apply to foods which use alcohol as a flavoring or in cooking as far as i am aware. any food which can be reasonably expected to include a large level of pure alcohol should be avoided, but this does not apply to beer batter in which the alcohol is effectively cooked off. i cant post links but search google for "beer battered fish chips drunk" and there is a yahoo page at the top.

wine sauce i cant seem to find anything cohesive about it, so may be best to avoid if in doubt.

Re: Alcohol in Food

:salam:

If I may complicate this discussion a little bit.

1 - Is an intoxicant haram as long as it exists and is consumed in the form of an intoxicant irrespective of whether you achieve an intoxicated state or not? Please present your dalail.

2 - Does the substance in which an intoxicant has been used, but the substance itself cannot be considered an intoxicant even inspite of the use of an intoxicant in it, considered haram? Please present your dalail.

Re: Alcohol in Food

well..if i may, the porcine-bovine insulin used to treat type I diabetes, and the gelatin in meds..etc..since pork is haram...what about its components used for medicinal purposes?
