End of another great cricket career. A wonderful cricketer.. and a great fast bowler.

He'll be there till the world cup playing one dayers. Next world cup will be sad as both Akram and Donald will retire

well iam sad for donald but i think akram should have been kicked out long back or perhaps thrown in jail.

Poor guy's half of the career was not in the international level because his country was banned from playing international cricket. I the first time I saw him was in world cup 92 in Australia, I guess he was fastest bowler of his time.

The Game Responds:

*That's what The Game hates about our desi people, they can appreciate an extremely overrated batsman from across the border(Not mentioning any names),or a chucker from the islands(No names, again),but they would hate to actually praise the talent possessed by our country men. It sickens The Game to death.

Allan Donald, however, was absolutely praiseworthy. The People's ARTIST would never forget his battle with Mike Atherton in a test match in England;it was simply *ferocious*. But he should have retired a year or two ago, since he was constantly going down with injuries before or in the middle of test matches. Oh well, South Africa still has Shaun Pollock

, one of the most underrated bowlers today. People,That Is All.*

It’s not how you play The Game, shmucks,it’s how The Game plays you.

I think this reaction is based on the fact that Akram has taken a lot of Indian wickets. Akram is still a force to reckon with. The last triangular series in Sharjah proved it where he was awarded the Best Bowler of the tournament award

well not at all infact i think akram was one the best fast bowlers of all time and if he had played the game with sincerety he would have been a legend a all time great but instead he was into making money and match fixing which many times he sold the countries honour i have no symphathy for him.

look Kabir, if there is anyone who should have a grudge against Wasim for the way he's behaved in the past, it's the Pakistanis.I really don't care for Wasim as a team player or anything. He has done a lot of things which have significantly affected his public image and standing.

But I also don't get those pople who call him the best "left-armer". This "Best Left Armer" phrase is a very convenient way of giving him a place in history and yet entirely ducking the best ever issue. He's the best bowler ever IMHO.

Recently after he retired, Ambrose said that to him the best ever bowler was Wasim who could do anything with the ball fitness permitting. A lot of people share that opinion, e.g., Chris Cairns. If the Ambrose compliment isn't a testament to Wasim's ability, I don't know what is.

Kapil when asked to pick his ideal bowler from bits and pieces of all bowlers, picked Wasim when it came to sheer ability. It's just sad to see one-dimensional bowlers like McGrath and the like being compared to Wasim.

Someone said about Wasim that this man could get any player out whenever he felt like it. And watching him play, I've gotten the sense many a times. Examples are his dismissals of Dravid in the triseries in Australia.

He is just replaceable right now. There's no-one in the fringes of the team or in the team, who can claim to fill the gap Wasim's absence creates.

The Game Responds:

*Quote of the week,Mr. sambrialian. You deserve credit for realizing that McGrath is a stupid *shmuck*,and extremely overrated. The Game used to cry when McGrath was compared to Donald, because The Game knew how much better Donald was.

And a very interesting fact, kabir is not Pakistani! Why don't you complain about Srinath or some other Indian pace bowler, they are all pathetic for God's sake! Harbhajan Singh might have talent, but the talent in bowling stops there. Go solve your country's issues first, and then tell us about our problems. People,That Is All.*

Gentleman, the thread is on Donalds retirement. Please stick to the thread.

well yes i know sambrialian its pakistanis who must complain but as a cricket lover .every cricket loving individual feels for the game without boundaries.
its sad that such immense talent has gone down the drain.

Couldn’t agree more with you.

I remember Donald when he was a tearaway youngster in the rebel tours that South Africa hosted. If his wickets during that era were added to his score (remembering that if South Africa was allowed to play test cricket, Alan Donald would have played those years), Alan could have had more than 450 wickets to his tally.

The best that did happen to Donald’s career was his teaming up with Bob Woolmer who steered the young bowler on his career path and brought out the best in Donald. Some people in South Africa claim that some part of the blame of all Donald’s recent injuries might be because Woolmer is not there to look after him anymore.

Donald was approached by England when he was playing as a youngster for Warwickshire, to remain in England and become selectable for the English team - he refused as he felt his country needed him when they one day get out of isolation.

I also have to agree about his tiff with Atherton. I don’t think I saw Alan in such a destoying mood ever. I also remember Steve Waugh being bowled 4 times in one over against the body with the other two balls going past him without Steve being able to lay bat on ball. Then there was the time during a Sharjah Cup when one unknown batsman came to the crease without a helmet to face Donald. One ball later he was helped from the field on a stretcher! And then there was the infamous incident during the last WC against AUS in the semi-final…

The way Cronje used to turn to Donald when the chips were down, tells a lot about the respect Donald’s former Captain had for South Africa’s best bowler ever. Interesting is the fact that Cronje, a bosom-friend of Donald since schooldays (Donald actually stayed with te Cronje’s during high school days), never even tried to influence Donald in the money scandal knowing that Donald is incorruptable. Never in the whole career of Donald was there one incident where fingers were pointed to him as to tampering of the ball (which almost all other fast bowlers sometimes had to endure).

Some other interesting piece of Donald’s life: He was refused to attend a very prestigious school that Hansie Cronje attended because his command of the English language was not good enough! I think the school would do anything to rather have choosen Donald than Cronje.

Donald actually retired just after the WI tour but was convinced by the selectors to carry on for another year. I hope he can still have a last fling during the WC 2003.

I wish Donald well with his future, whatever that will be. Pollock, according to me, should lay down the captaincy to concentrate on his bowling. I hope South Africa has a young tearaway bowler somewhere to replace what we have lost…
