Twenty years later, the key players from an essential mob picture may be reuniting. Robert DeNiro and Martin Scorsese have reportedly been developing ‘The Irishman,’ a drama based on the real-life story of a Mafia hit man, for a couple of years. Now Al Pacino and Joe Pesci are said to be “circling” the project, according to Deadline.
DeNiro, Pesci, and Scorsese memorably teamed for ‘Raging Bull’ in 1980, ‘Goodfellas’ in 1990, and ‘Casino’ in 1995. In the latter two pictures, they painted vivid, ground-level portrayals of mob life. ‘The Irishman’ is based on ‘I Heard You Paint Houses]("I Heard You Paint Houses": Frank "The Irishman" Sheeran and the Inside Story of the Mafia, the Teamsters, and the Last Ride of Jimmy Hoffa: Charles Brandt: 9781586420895: Amazon.com: Books),’ a best-selling book by Charles Brandt about the life of Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran, who claimed that he killed legendary teamster Jimmy Hoffa in 1975. There’s no word on what roles Pacino and Pesci would play; could one of them take on Hoffa and the other Sheeran’s boss, Russell Bufalino? If everything comes together, DeNiro would play Sheeran.
As Deadline notes, the Scorsese-directed pilot for the HBO series ‘Boardwalk Empire’ airs on Sunday, and Scorsese is currently knee-deep in production of ‘Hugo Cabret’ in 3D. We’re not certain to ever see a ‘Goodfellas’ reunion, but adding Pacino to the mix definitely sounds intoxicating. It would also be sure to leave a better taste in the mouth than ‘Righteous Kill,’ which paired Pacino and DeNiro to minimal effect.
