The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Shaharyar Khan confirmed on Sunday that fresh central contracts would be issued from July 1 this year with chances of the retainer fees being enhanced a bit for the players.
"I have held a detailed meeting with captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, coach Bob Woolmer and manager Saleem Altaf in Barbados on this matter and we have reached a consensus on the method for issuing the new central contracts.
“But I will also be meeting with chief selector Wasim Bari soon to also get his views on the contracts which according to the captain, coach and manager have been a successful experiment,” Shaharyar said.
The existing central contracts given out to 17 players expire on June 30 and Shaharyar said that in the new contracts the number of players might be decreased or two types of contracts might be given out to the players.
“We have discussed the fitness positions of the pace bowlers Shoaib Akhtar, Umar Gul and Shabbir Ahmed, and the latter also has a question mark on his bowling action. We will deliberate on them and might give them short term contracts instead of lone term ones.”
He explained that the short-term contracts would be from July to end of September and the long term ones until December/January.
“All these three bowlers have faced fitness problems and Shoaib who has a grade one contract has not played since January this year. But he has now gone to play for Worcestershire while Umar Gul has also resumed bowling. So we might decide to give them short term contracts to see how things go and if they are available for selection before England comes we could extend their contracts,” he explained.
He said Woolmer during the meeting in Barbados had described the method for giving out the central contracts as the best ever in the world and added that the criteria of form and seniority would be again taken into consideration while giving out fresh contracts.
“Naturally, seniority would be given more weightage in the new central contracts as would performances in the last six months.”
The Board has kept only four players Inzamam-ul-Haq, Yousuf Youhana, Abdul Razzaq and Shoaib in the existing grade one contracts which has a monthly retainer of Rs 200,000 followed by the Grade B contract (Rs 125,000) and Grade C (Rs 75,000).
He said some of the players in the lowest grade might be promoted to the upper grades in the new contracts.
