WASHINGTON: An intellectual is someone whose mind watches itself, said French-Algerian writer-philosopher Albert Camus; turns out that someone is keeping track of intellectuals too.

The latest issue of the influential *Foreign Policy *magazine has identified the world’s Top 100 “public intellectuals”, in its second such exercise, awarding America - and the United States - with more cerebral heft than any other continent or country.

India comes out shining too. Besides familiar names such as Al Gore, Noam Chomsky, Francis Fukuyama, Umberto Eco, Lee Kuan Yew, the list has some half-dozen Indians: historian Ramachandra Guha, political psychologist Ashis Nandy, and environmentalist Sunita Narain, all of whom live in India, among them. ( Watch )

Four other Indians based outside India also make the list:

Economist-Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, journalist author Fareed Zakaria, novelist Salman Rushdie, and San Diego-based neuroscientist V S Ramachandran.

Neighbouring Pakistan and Bangladesh have one name each in the Top 100 - lawyer-politician Aitzaz Ahsan and microfinance guru Mohammed Yunus, while has four.

Unmindful of the gibe by a former US vice-president Sprio Agnew that an intellectual is a man who doesn’t know how to park a bike, *Foreign Policy *has parked for more than a third (36) of the worlds Top 100 eggheads in , most of them in the US.

Among them are two New York Times columnists, Thomas Friedman and Paul Krugman. For the record, Agnew, who coined several alliterative excesses such as “nattering nabobs of negativism” and “hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history,” resigned from the vice-presidency following charges of tax evasion and money laundering.

No one accused him of being an intellectual although he once characterized a group of opponents as “an effete corps of impudent snobs who characterize themselves as intellectuals.”

*Foreign Policy *also credits Europe, which has deep tradition of intellectualism, with 30 names in the Top 100 - less than North America - including Britons Niall Fergson, Ian Buruma and Christopher Hitchens. The Middle East accounts for 11, and Asia 12, which means India accounts for half of Asia’s eggheads.

The list includes 17 political scientists, 15 economists, 12 each of philosophers, scientists, and journalists, eight artists and novelists, six each of historians, activists, and leaders, four religious heads, and two environmentalists.

In defining the criteria for its selection, *Foreign Policy *said the candidates, “among the worlds most sophisticated thinkers… have shown distinction in their particular field as well as an ability to influence wider debate, often far beyond the borders of their own country."

Re: Aitizaz Ahsan - among 100 intellects

Great, try and destablize your country and become an intellect, what next.

Re: Aitizaz Ahsan - among 100 intellects

Are you talking about Musharraf because I think declaring emergency rule, crushing the media and opposition and declaring war on your own people qualifies as destabalizing your country.

Re: Aitizaz Ahsan - among 100 intellects

** PPP chief says every Pakistani has right to debate CJP appointment

Daily Times Monitor*

LAHORE: While the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) does not recognise President Pervez Musharraf as a constitutional president, the country’s economic conditions may deteriorate if he is impeached, PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari said on Wednesday.

In an interview with ARY TV, he said that Musharraf’s remnants would not be allowed to survive. He said that while the PPP did not support Musharraf, the prime minister and parliament had a working relationship with the Presidency for smooth functioning of government affairs.

He said Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani had spelled out the PPP’s aims by ordering the release of the detained judges in his maiden speech to the National Assembly. The committee drafting a resolution for the restoration of the judges was formed to finalise the modalities for the restoration of the sacked judges, he said. He also clarified that the judges’ restoration had not been part of the PPP’s election slogan.

Right: He said that parliament would be involved in appointing judges of superior courts in future, following the ratification of the constitutional package. He said that he personally believed that there should be a proper procedure for the appointment of judges. There must be scrutiny of the appointment of chief justice of Pakistan as every Pakistani has a right to debate the appointment of the CJP, he added.

The PPP co-chairman said that while he and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif both opposed the 17th Amendment, its repeal would abolish the reserved seats for women and minorities in the National Assembly.

Zardari said that the prime minister had provided relief to the media in his first speech, adding that the government invited criticism.

According to APP, the co-chairman said that the present government had inherited various problems from the previous regime, adding that they would be resolved by creating an atmosphere of reconciliation in the country. He vowed to pull the country out of all its inherited crises.

Re: Aitizaz Ahsan - among 100 intellects

Oh c’mon Pal! Don’t lose your heart over it. I didn’t say i dislike you posting colorful threads with gigantic headings infused with eye catching words like EXPOSED, and what-not. I actually like reading your posts, gives me a good laugh every now and then.

So…carry on!

Irony of the matter now is that Musharraf crowd has been cornered and qualify as Main Na Manoon Group! :jhanda: Aren’t you proud?

Re: Aitizaz Ahsan - among 100 intellects

Alhamdulilallah. Good to see that people are recognizing the Unprecedented Economic Growth seen under the great leadership of Great President Musharaf - the greatest Pakistani leader since Quaid-e-Azam. :jhanda:

Re: Aitizaz Ahsan - among 100 intellects

His uniform was removed under the orders from his boss in America and as far as the elections are concerned they were free and fair not because of Musharraf but despite of him. The observers and media didn't let him manipulate the results as he wanted it. Try again bachoo.

Re: Aitizaz Ahsan - among 100 intellects

One wants the kursi more than Pakistan the other wants to keep him happy in order to keep the maafi nama given to him. Convenient isn’t it.

The most third rate power crazy president ever to rule Pakistan.

Re: Aitizaz Ahsan - among 100 intellects

Re: Aitizaz Ahsan - among 100 intellects

remember all results were going to be announced centrally and no polling results were to be announced. That is where he was going to rig the results but alas the observers and the media put an end to that. Got it.

So try again bachoo.
