Air travel after 30 weeks

My husband wants to take me on a babymoon to Turkey, from the US. The only issue is that we can only go in the 3rd week of March when I will be 31 weeks pregnant, In Sha Allah. He just told me about it today, so I havent had a chance to talk to my OB yet, and find out what she says. But I just wanted to know if others have traveled after 30 weeks, and what their OBs had to say about it.

Re: Air travel after 30 weeks

Canadian airline rules for pregnant travellers - BabyCenter Canada

i don’t know- 31 weeks is late… would you be comfortable being away from your hospital/OB in case something happens?

how about going somewhere closer? like within the US or Canada?

Re: Air travel after 30 weeks

When my husband mentioned it, I was concerned about being halfway across the world in my 3rd trimester. We talked some more, and came up with other options. There is no where in US we want to go. We were thinking of Whistler, BC, Banff or UK as well. But obviously, I would still ask my OB first. Alhamdulillah, so far this pregnancy has been great, so I really dont think there is going to be an issue from my OBs side, but I still wanted opinions from others.

Thanks for the link! I was also looking up this stuff last night, and it seems most airlines will allow you to travel until basically your last month.

I don’t think you will be allowed to travel beginning of 7 month. It’s not just OBbut check out airline’s policies too. Personally I wouldn’t be comfortable traveling abroad. My son came early maybe that’s why

Re: Air travel after 30 weeks

I went on my babymoon at around 30 weeks too but it was within Europe and the plane journey was just over two hours so relatively short in comparison to yours. Obviously I didn’t tell the airline, tut tut.

Another thing to consider however, is even if you did decided to go anyway, how much are you really going to enjoy Turkey being heavily pregnant? I presume you’re going to want to go to Istanbul in which case there’ll be plenty of sightseeing and walking involved. And if you’re just going do a relaxing break by the sea and not doing much else kinda holiday then why not just stay in the US to do that…go to Turkey on your first family holiday instead maybe? It’s a very child country and you’ll enjoy it more without the worry of going into labour and other such pregnancy anxieties.

Re: Air travel after 30 weeks

Things change in the third semester. Fatigue, aches, and discomfort increase. It’s just an unpredictable time for you and for the baby (especially first babies). I don’t think that I would take the risk (and as Brit Chick said, you may not really enjoy a trip that requires a lot of walking around and stuff – maybe a lazing on the beach kind of vacation is a better idea).

Air travel after 30 weeks

My twins were born 2 months early and the woman next to us in the NICU delivered at 31 weeks while visiting family- she was from Jordan and said she had no complications before her water breaking. Luckily she had family here but her husband was not with her which broke my heart. As someone who had sudden complications- I say- go somewhere in the US and plan an awesome trip before the baby can walk.

Air travel after 30 weeks

Just to add- the woman from Jordan’s baby was in the hospital for nearly 8 weeks and then she had to wait even longer to fly. IA, none of this could happen to you, but I would really think twice.

Re: Air travel after 30 weeks

Thanks all! We weighed all the pros and cons, and decided maybe its better to stay close by. We are still deciding between New York (we have been before, but it was just a day trip) or Montreal (we are originally from Canada, but now live in US - so Khuda na khasta if something were to happen in Montreal, I still have OHIP to rely on and go to the hospital). I guess Turkey will have to wait :frowning:
