True. i pay Rs. 2500 from Bombay to Lucknow [a 2 hours and 10 minute flight]...it's like $45...nowhere in the world you can buy that long flight for that price.
This is when you book in advance. Today's fares are around Rs 4,500.
On 24th of June I traveled from Bangalore to Baroda(Via Mumbai) Indigo Airlines, and had to spend a whopping Rs 10,100 for an one way ticket. :D (The ticket was booked only the previous day)

of course...you have to book in advance to get the lowest fare.
btw, Air India is inundated with Rs.100 fare seekers...and as a result, the website [the only way to get this unbelievable fare] crashed and was down for about a day.
well, Air India has the lowest fare from New York / Chicago to anywhere in India. i've paid $1260 [Canadian Dollars] including all taxes and surcharges for the following itinerary:
Delhi - Allahabad
Allahabad - Delhi
Delhi - Kolkata
Kolkata - Hyderabad
Hyderabad - Mumbai
Mumbai - Delhi
Delhi - New York
New York - Toronto
those cities that i'm visiting are NOT necessarily connecting cities...i have relatives to visit in Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad.
Re: Air India offering domestic fares for Rs 100 [US $1.65] on Air India Day
flew half a dozen flights in india early this year - all four corners. flights are not cheap by indian standards, and not significantly cheaper than US travel anymore.
the bad thing about flying in india is that even if you check in a fairly empty suitcase, they will claim its heavier than allowed weight and charge you random numbers. i am surprised air india still exists - they charge as much as the private airlines do, employ a bunch of rude incompetent lazy ground staff and cabin crew, and still run as per the 1980s style of doing business - scolding customers, making them run from counter to counter...
on the plus side - most private airlines in india have more leg room than economy comfort seats in the US. in-flight food choices are amazing. most aircraft are new and in great shape. and lots of women pilots. _

i agree with you on the above highlighted part. however, i had just the opposite experience except 'on the ground". they aren't that great on the ground.
i've flown with them on more than a dozen flights domestically. i had the piece system so i had no problem with weight. my both bags weighed less than 23 Kg each, a carry-on weighing 7 kg and a laptop. no problemo at all!.
i was served hot sandwich corn bread chicken sandwich, coke, tea, desset and salad on a 50 minute flight from Delhi to Lucknow.
i'm a satisfied customer of Air India. i fly several times a year with them.
i've two free tickets for domestic travel. 5500 miles gets me a free ticket from Delhi to Allahabad. :)

Yes,this is mainly because most of these private airlines are relatively new entrants in to the market and almost all of them vied for international routes. So they had to keep up the standard.

yup...two suitcases and one carry-on bags full of goodies. :)
besides...
i'll earn enough miles to get one free round trip ticket to anywhere Air India flies domestically...2000 miles from Leh in Kashmir to Kanniya Kumari in Tamil Nadu AND 3000 miles from Wakro in Arunachal Pradesh to Dwarka in Gujrat.
:)
