Air India joins Star Allaiance...good News for Canadian travelers to India

Hi,

India has joined Star Alliance, it’s 27th member.

since Air India discontinued it’s operations to and from Toronto a couple of years ago, it’s a welcome news for Canadian travelers because it will provide enhanced and more frequent service to and from Toronto to India.

fares will also come down due to increased competition.

a lot of Canadians of East Indian origin would like to use Air India because it serves the domestic routes within India and the baggage problem will be solved. you could carry 2 suitcases [23 kg each] all the way from any point of origin in Canada to any point of destination in India.

Am quite surprised by this but good news..

Never flown with them but was told their service used to be pretty bad..

Re: Air India joins Star Allaiance...good News for Canadian travelers to India

Yes. Air India was very bad. And internally Indian Airlines worse. Then came competition. I would go beat Indian Airlines. Lots of other good options.

Mostly I stay away from Air India. Maybe things r better now.

Re: Air India joins Star Allaiance...good News for Canadian travelers to India

These days it's about QR, EK, EY, etc.

If anything, this airline would now be just a "feeder" airline, feed the big guys like AC, LH, TK, etc.

Re: Air India joins Star Allaiance...good News for Canadian travelers to India

My parents flew with Jet Airways in the past and quite liked their service.. Kingfisher seemed to have quite a good rep as well.. Not sure what they're like now..

Airline service can change so much over time.. I remember loving British Airways when I was younger but now I'd only fly with them if I get a really good deal (for ex v.cheap business class tickets when booking last minute)..

Re: Air India joins Star Allaiance...good News for Canadian travelers to India

Yes. Both the above airlines I think I have traveled within india. Great customer service to all races. Air India service was good for only select..

I doubt indian airlines has gotten any better. Treated us like crap that day. Won't go anywhere near.

Re: Air India joins Star Allaiance...good News for Canadian travelers to India

they used to be bad because there was no competition back then. now, they face much tougher competition and they have to fare well, their services have significantly improved both on the ground and in the air. their online reservation s pretty good.

i flew with them last year and i was impressed by the level of their improvement. AI, keep it up! :)

Indian Airlines, Sahara Air and Air Alliance have all merged together. they are significantly much better now.

Air India is not stupid. they will get their fare share. for instance, Air India doesn't have flights to/from Canada. now, the partner airlines will feed their hubs in Europe and the USA for passengers traveling between India, US, Canada and EU.

Kingfisher has gone bankrupt. Jet Airways is good but they operate aged planes [B737] within India and that's one reason why i don't fly with them. i prefer A320/21 over B737.

they still owe me $60 for the canceled flight during their gasping hours of operation two years ago.

things have changed , Southie. i flew with Air India last year. their fares are great, services good and frequent connections within India are enough to choose Air India.

i paid Toronto-Delhi-Bom-Varanasi and return for $1150 Canadian and i earned enough miles to get a free ticket from anywhere to anywherewithin India.

i think i will travel with them whenever i travel next time.

free baggage allowance [2 bags, 23 kg each] will now cover domestic sector as well.

Re: Air India joins Star Allaiance...good News for Canadian travelers to India

Thanks KKF. Didn't know kingfisher bankrupt. Also didn't know indian airlines merger with Sahara et al. The bad treatment happened in 1995. Haven't got over that. Utterly chappy treatment.

Re: Air India joins Star Allaiance...good News for Canadian travelers to India

oh oh...sorry to hear that. if you don't mind telling us, what was that 'utterly chappy treatment'?

Re: Air India joins Star Allaiance...good News for Canadian travelers to India

Air Canada flight canceled from Toronto to Europe on way to india. They put us up in hotel. Next morning utter confusion. Then I think we were put up in air india. Who just treated us shoddily. Their flight was to Delhi via so e europe country. I had to go to bombay. Air India made.no arrangements for Delhi to bombay connecting flight. We were tossed to indian airlines. All lien lines were full. For an hour we didn't receive any help. Each of us kept going to indian airlines officials. Who wouldn't tell us what we needed to do. Just asked us to wait in some corner. Screamed at us. That's all i remember. Utterly unprofessional conduct all the way air Canada air india and worst of all IA.

Re: Air India joins Star Allaiance...good News for Canadian travelers to India

i'm sorry to hear that but as it happend a long time ago, they have come a long way in improving services.

a couple of years ago, my bro's parent-in-laws were supposed to take Air India Flight back to Toronto from Delhi but due to pilot strike, they canceled all flights to Canada. Air India promptly booked them on British Airways and informed the passengers. it was a breeze. btw, they also offered to refund the return portion of the fare if they wished.
