Air in India unfit to breathe

AIR INDIA …UNFIT TO BREATHE …

The intersection recorded the cancer-causing benzene at 104 times higher than safe levels.

Air in India unfit to breathe, says study

New Delhi, June 3
Indians are being exposed to dangerous levels of highly toxic gases, including carcinogenic organic compounds and sulphur fumes, everyday through the air they breathe even as the country continues to have “no standards for these chemicals found in ambient air”.

According to the Community Environment Monitoring (CEM) report—“Smokescreen: ambient air quality in India”— released today, the country is “pathetically behind in terms of infrastructure to safeguard its environment or health of people from air pollution. India’s air pollution monitoring is primitive and the world’s fourth largest economy has no standards for some of the most toxic and commonly found air pollutants,” says CEM’s Shweta Narayan.

The air in India is unfit to breathe, the report has declared.

What’s more shocking is that the traffic junction at the ITO, now considered to be “comparatively safe” as far as air pollution levels are concerned, is one of the toxic hotspots of the nation with 18 chemicals, of which three are known to cause cancer, being found at the spot by the study conducted by the Chennai-based NGO.

The intersection recorded the cancer-causing benzene at 104 times higher than safe levels.

“Compared to 1997, carbonmonoxide levels are down 32 per cent and sulphur dioxide levels 39 per cent. While the change is remarkable, it has also lulled regulators into complacency. The air has never been monitored for toxic gases and has therefore never been regulated for the same,” says the report, which the CEM claims is the first national air pollution study about Delhi.

The sample collected from near Hindustan Insecticides Ltd in Kerala was detected to have contained haxacholorobutadiene, an indication of dioxin—one of the most poisonous chemicals known to science.

The study largely focussed on cities in the south, besides Mumbai. The chemicals found in ambient air over residential areas near industrial houses contained toxins that affect the human central nervous system, cardiovascular system and even the reproductive system.

The samples were collected with the participation of the local community because the NGO says that the government refused to acknowledge the concern about pollution, saying that nothing could be done in the absence of standards.

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

are you aware of similar studies regarding pakistan?

chinese is also improper for breathing, and air in europe was very bad too few decades ago, fortunately high regulations on industry emissions have reduced the pollution.
BUt europe and america have recently delocalised the most polluting industries to third world (mostly south east asia, china, india) on the excuse that it's "cheaper" but the truth is that without strict environment regulations it's really cheaper to produce dangerous chemicals, so europe/america is poisoning third wolrd country people instead of their own people.

this is NOT a fatality! europeans and americans fought to win the right to breathe, they got educated, and slowly forced their bosses to slow down pollutions, and we're still fighting.
the biggest hurdle for third world countries is the lack of science knowledge (though china and india are now improving), so people don't complain about the chemical content of their air!

make environment unions and kick the a$$ of polluters!
there are technologies to purify fumes and water used by industries!

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

air in india and pak would be cleaner if the british were still here, why did we ask them to leave?

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

third world countries (mostly africa) used to receive far more money for developping projects and infrastrucutre when they were colonies of some european countries (mostly england anf france) but those countries suffered abusive leaders and poverty exploitation by some corrupted rulers since the end of colonisation , so former colonised (third world poor people) are flying "en masse" to europe (and america) and asking for visa to leave with their former coloniser that they (thrid world people) kicked out of their countries funny in it?, ironic?....
so who do you think ask them (europeans) to leave??
rich indigenous ruling class:D, they wanted the money and power of the europeans, not to improve their people condition and developp their countries, but to have expensive embassies in luxurious upper class capitals of europe and america and to send their kids in upper schools there:D

revolutions are rarely made by and for the common people, usually the wanna be rich are manipulating the poors and claiming to act for them, while they (wanna be rich) are only taking their own interests into account:D

india and pakistan are no exceptions, maharajahs/hindu business men, and muslim landlords needed more power and money, so they got rid of the brits, and made two countries, one for each ruling class:D, to keep on exploiting poors;)

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

People in pakistan and india are indifferent towards pollution, generally.

Firstly cause of poverty( they assume if they have die of cancer, it does not make a different if it is a lung cancer or blood cancer ) , lack of awareness. Govts keep on cutting trees and speeding up deforestation at alarming rate. and industry keeps pulloting envirenment like there is no tomorow.

Just recently two children died as companies were dumping their toxic waste in neigbhorhood in SITE area karachi. Dozens have died and more than 20,000 people got sick in Faisalabad after drinking polluted water during last two weeks :(

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

nice point to raise!

i remember that i heard africans did not care about AIDS cause it causes death at longer time than malaria/paludism.
so i guess pollution is not raising concern for pakistani/indians because they have more severe concerns, like hepatitis and other water borne desease due to bad hygiene which are bothering them more serioulsy than pollution

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

Number of people smoking is increasing daily. Previously you dint find women smoking, now it is a fad for everyone to smoke.

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

If the air in India is so bad to breathe, why are there over a billion people alive there?

I'm not serious, of course. The fact is the air in Pakistan isn't great either. The last time I was in Pakistan, I went to Karachi and I felt as if I was living inside of a smoker's lungs. It was horrible. I had to wear a mask whenever I went outside, especially to the crowded roads.

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

I have never travelled and will never travel by Air India. I don't wanna smell the planes and all that Uaahhhh

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

Abey, khotey dey "XYZ"......... Read the topic written by the topic starter first.....

And then, khotey dey "whatever",........ does Air India contains Pakistani Air? or the air in Air India is a Sri Lankan Air????

Use your empty Humty Dumpty shell. I have no plans to go to India to smell the air there but yes, the Air in Air India is a representation of "Air in India" which I might have to smell if I have to travel air India.....

Samajh main aae baat keh naheen :D

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

Too funny. Can't stop laughing. My co-employees are wodering why am I laughing so loudly

Re: Air in India unfit to breathe

Before I say anything I want to say that its good that Indian news papers are discussing this topic.

Not to diminish the seriousness of the problem but this is what happens when there is a sudden development, but comparatively India has fared better than others. For example take a look at this -
"A total of 16 out of the top 20 most polluted cities are in China. #1 on the list is Linfen City in Shanxi Province, China. “The whole city smells and is covered in smoke.”. "
