Oh jeez. Cynical much? Can't fairytales just be fairytales without looking for subtext? Like Ramsha, I grew up reading the stories and I don't think I'm any less independent or capable because I did, and I don't think little girls look at the princesses and mermaid and think any of those thoughts. You read them, you enjoy them, you play dress up, you grow up and move on to the next thing.

I saw this on FB. I do think it's pretty accurate, except Jasmine's, because she pretty much vocalizes that opinion and fights against it.
Despite that, I love those fairytales and would continue to watch them with my kids.

I have to agree with both teh cartoon and sgc... growing up, I really didnt know much about fairy tales because my mom encouraged us to read otehr books and children magazine with different set of stories.. I didnt even know about the names of all princesses until I came to the US in 2001. Now I see one of my friends daughter soooo invested in the princess craze that it scares me.. she doesnt like the princess who has a small house (I dunno which one is it but thats her reasoning for not liking her), she doesnt like the beast in beauty and beast because he isnt "cute" I dont know how she learned tehse things because no one in her family is like that.. and I mean NO ONE!!
either the kids these days are too smart and read between the lines or there is just much more publicity than ever before.. probably I was just a dumb kid.. but i am glad my mom kept us away from the princess drama.. I do love disney but not for the sake of princess but my love started for lion king and other animated movies as a child!

When I got my first doll I named her Thumbelina. I used to pretend I was her. Life was great! I remember Little Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks and the Three bears more so than Disney princesses.

Kids grow out of princesses...at least my 9 year old did at age 6. My 5 year old is still into them, more for the fact that they are princesses and not because of the conclusions we as adults may derive from them.
So as parents, it's nice to let them be kids but expose them to other fairy tales along with other literature so they enjoy a diverse reading experience. Disney channel sucks though!!

thank goodness for TVO Kids in Toronto. They actually show sensible kids programming. I happen to love Peep and the Big Wide World lol.

I think kids grow out of these stories before they actually are old enough to read between the lines.
The image appears to have been created by someone that really has issues with her self-esteem and is looking for someone or something to blame these issues on instead of taking responsibility for her own life.
