Age for having children?

Re: Age for having children?

In April 2002, the *Journal of Genetic Counseling released a report which estimated the average risk of birth defects in a child born of first cousins at 1.7–2.8% over an average base risk for non-cousin couples of 3%, or about the same as that of any woman over age 40.[SUP][181]](Cousin marriage - Wikipedia)[/SUP]In terms of mortality, a 1994 study found a mean excess pre-reproductive mortality rate of 4.4%,[SUP][182]](Cousin marriage - Wikipedia)[/SUP] While another study published in 2009 suggests the rate may be closer to 3.5%.[SUP][2]](Cousin marriage - Wikipedia)[/SUP] Put differently, first-cousin marriage entails a similar increased risk of birth defects and mortality as a woman faces when she gives birth at age 41 rather than at 30.

For the record, I have no objection to cousin marriages. It’s just that people who oppose women having children at an older age due to increased likelihood of genetic defects should then be equally against cousin marriages for the same reason otherwise their argument is rather flawed/hypocritical.

Re: Age for having children?

^whats the percentage of expected complications for women giving birth at older age?? lets say above 30??

Re: Age for having children?

You guys laugh but I've read studies where doctors and sociologists suggest tweaking the current model of devoting your twenties entirely to your career. They repeatedly stress that women should have children in their twenties and then focus on their career. Of course this is easier said than done, but I hope that in the future, people will be able to take time off in their career without being penalized for it.

Re: Age for having children?

Agreed. I personally don’t think cousin marriage should be *encouraged. *But another thing to keep in mind is that it is simply much harder to get pregnant at 40. Getting pregnant after 46 is almost impossible. And then if you do get pregnant, you have an increased risk of birth defects.

Re: Age for having children?

Well if women are to have kids in their twenties, then men will have to settle down in their twenties too or marry women a decade younger than them. Guess the age difference in desi marriages isn't all that crazy, in fact it's pretty scientific.

Re: Age for having children?
