Afzal Khan was a powerful man of Afghan descent and was an experienced warrior, he was general of bijapur. He was much taller and strongly-built than Shivaji. He would attack shivaji and fail? no way. Pashtun custom of hugging men on hello cost him his life, shivaji stabbed him with his hidden dagger while hugging. Afzal khan was unarmed.
The urdu phrase “shivaji ka khanjar” means treachery
“Baghal may churi, Mun may raam raam” phrase also has background of this incident
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
lols. Shiva ji Khanjar. never heard it.
Was Shiva ji a Pundit to utter Raam raam all the time?
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
^keep loling. You do not feel pakistani to me
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
Thanks. I don't need certificate for my being Pakistani or Muslim from any poster here. I think I should make this my signature :)
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
Afzal Khan was collegue of Shahji, father of shivaji, whom he once humilaitated while working for Bijapur empire in Bangalore, but used to call him bhateeja. Afzal khan tried to kill shivaji while hugging him by stabbing him by a dagger. Shivaji used Tiger claws and tore his stomach. Shivaji went to meet Khan with very small detachment of troops. But when it came to guirella fighting, his troops were as good as modern day afghans :)
Shivaji even paid great respect to him after his death.
Though, in war, truth is the first casuality :)
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
what do you mean by tiger claws? literal or metaphorical?
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
Tiger claws were maratha weapons of conical shape which are worn over fingers, it was through this weapon, shivaji devoured Afzal Khan.
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
Interesting info.
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
mukh mein raam bagal mein churri is pharase of UP, not of Shivaji’s Maharashtra
and if size of individual really mattered that much, Gurkhas would have never defeated everyone and Japanese wouldn’t have been super-power. And Negroes would have been king of the world ![]()
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
I want to do another lols, but I would not feel Pakistani after that :)
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
^^^ this reminds me of arguements between Tagore and Gandhi, Gandhi beleived in Swadeshi, indegenous technology. Tagore always argued and wrote long letters to Gandhi that knowledge transcends all the borders and should not be controlled thorough some passionate idea of religion and nationalism. But we are ordinary people and in our culture, our opinion are passionate and personal, it has less to do with knowledge and more to do with our egos. In longer term, it decreases our receptivity to new, telling you this with experience, because once I had been the same.
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
if you look at marwati's pic, the khanjar is dropping from afzal khan's hand, and shivaji is scratching up his tummy wearing the claws on his fingers.
ironically it is afzal khan who had stabbed and killed some other raja after inviting him for peace talks.
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
muqawee you have made the friendship with so many indians and you are enjoying their attention lol
Blood is indeed thicker than water, you are afterall an indic/desi
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
Thanks for the compliments. At least, you acknowledged that I have ability to make friends in enemy territory ![]()
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
The question of who went to betray who is one that will never be answered. The Persian-language chronicle of the time by Khafi Khan stated that Shivaji went planning to assassinate Afzal Khan, the chronicles from the Maratha side state that Afzal Khan went to assassinate Shivaji.
Although if it is true that Afzal Khan had killed Raja Kasturi Renga of Sera after inviting him to meet to surrender, then it is plausible that he tried to repeat the same ruse.
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
Whats so special about Afzal Khan BTW? There might have been such incidents on both the sides.
After all, all is fair in war and history is not about giving opportunities to those who can't defend themselves.
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
Nothing, the entire purpose is one can feel pride/shame on what happened some 200 years ago.
So if your ancestors were able to kick balls of my ancestors I must feel shame on that and you should be proud about it :D
Re: Afzal khan and treachery of Shivaji
