I know this is a silly question, but after your wedding, what happens with the food? I mean if I pay the caterer, can I just like take the remaining food home and put it in a deep freezer?

you paid for it...it's your food...you may take it if you so wish...best is to feed the poor if you happen to be in Pakistan...you'll get reward for that, iA.

It depends where you're located.
From personal experience:
In Pakistan, you can take the leftover food with you while in Dubai, the hotels don't let you take the food with you. I remember for my sister's wedding, both, at The Taj Palace and The Atlantis, they threw away the remaining food which just broke our hearts. But they just didn't let us.

I think if you talk to the caterer beforehand and make it clear that you expect to take the food with you, they will accommodate. But don't assume they will give it to you. Make sure to confirm this with them.

the norm is to take it home with you but it would be best to confirm i suppose

Has anybody heard about giving food to the groom's family to take along with them after the rukhsati? This is something I've heard - how common is this?

in apksitan even hotels give you food ,you just need to tell them and keep an eye on food, sometimes there is leftover food but they say no leftover food

It isn't permitted in Toronto for health and safety reasons. That's what we were told by our venue. The only thing we were able to take home was our leftover wedding cake.

In Pakistan? Yes you can take all the food with you without any problem, not sure about hotels and caterers ouside Pakistan!
