Derbyshire secure Pierson and Afridi
Media Release - 15 January 2003
Derbyshire CCC have today secured the signatures of Adrian Pierson as Club Coach on a one-year contract, and Pakistani international cricketer Shahid Afridi as replacement second overseas player for the period of April and May 2003.
Afridi, an aggressive all round cricketer, has signed initially for the first two months of the season, given that Nathan Astle is presently contracted to Derbyshire between June and September 2003.
However, Astle’s chances of joining up with the Club have been the subject of debate following his recent knee injury, and Derbyshire await a report from New Zealand Cricket before taking any further action on a potential replacement for Astle, or an extension of Afridi’s contract, should it be required.
“Being able to sign an exciting cricketer such as Shahid is a further boost to the Club, and evidence that high quality players want to join our promising squad,” said Derbyshire’s chief executive John Smedley.
afridi played for english county last summer....
he was very impresive....
took the PLAYER OF THE MONTH award for the short period he played....
almost broke his 37 ball century record in one of the mathces but fell short of the hundred....
he took his team to final after which he had to come back to pakistan and his team lost the final....
Why can't Pakistani superstars get full contracts for the whole year?. WHy accept being a replacement for a month for some gora overseas player. You will tell me that he has commitments with Pakistan cricket team but so do the other overseas players and it is a part of their contract that they will skip those days when thier national team is playing.
If you think about it, Saqlain has been amazing for Surrey, and still is flowing really great. Although has dropped in rankings in the International scene.
Afridi did amazing for Leicestershire for as long as he was there. Unfortunately they lost in the final :(
But if you see, he took 3 wickets and scored 20 runs in the final. Not bad at all.

Thats the point. Its no big deal doing great among mediocre player of English county.
But the cost is too much.Too much of cricket burns out the player and getting easy wicket against easy opponent inflate the acutual calibre of bowler.
If you look at recent example of all the Asian player(specially bowlers) who played in County their performance went down badly after that.Exaples are Kumble,Srinath,Saqlain,Razzaq etc etc
Afridi improved his bowling tremendously when he lasy played season overthere. I think its a good move. Once he improves his communication skills, he can be THE future leader of Pakistani team.

Khuda k leyee Pathan bhai optimism ki bhee hud hotee hay
He can never be the leader of Pakistani team no matter what he do . If in NEAR future he dont learn how to stay at the wicket, we better find some other same-bowling-capibility-but-better-batting-skills player and dump Afridi ! He just puts whole batting line under pressure.
who said county players are kids n not pros??!?! they have class..not as much as the asian players....but they certainly can play..they can. trust me.
plus..saqi, razaak and azhar have got annual contracts anyway and afridi isnt filling up for Astle, he's Derby's 2nd overseas player. Its just that he opted for a 2-month contract initially. Hes elligible to get it extended by mutual consent.
