I’m not surprised to see Akram there.I already knew he had a high number of ducks (which in some way has to do with the very big amount of matches he played). Wasim also is pretty high on the list of most run outs. As for Afridi, though he’s earned most of his ducks I have to say. Even though he is 1 short of 7,000 ODI runs, let’s hope he gets there in the next match after failing to do it against Bangladesh.
If I had played so many games, I’d be there too. Maybe even bettered it, the 7,000 runs that is. But even an Afridi fanboy can’t deny that he did not do his talent justice in the batting department. A natural athlete like him could have conquered new boundaries had he played with an inch of sense and sensibility every time he went out to bat.
For my money Afridi has lost as more matches than won them - I’m not talking about regularity here, 2-3 good wickets, or 20-30 quick runs. I am talking about exceptional performances. If he has 50 of these where he turned the match around, then there are more than 50 instances where he burned the match to the ground. Pakistan needed sensible batting, and he slogged his way to put unneeded pressure on the remaining batsmen.
Still, the cricketing world needed Afridi, and I’m glad they got Afridi. For me personally, it’s the classic case of great expectations. But today, I can only wish the man good luck and hope he crosses the milestone of 7,000 runs the next time he comes out with a bat in his hand.
Why is he still batting down the order than opening the innings?I always thought that was instrumental in him not being able to deliver when it is most needed.
But it wasn’t.Afridi scored only when he felt like scoring. Sure a good ball can get anyone out, but I’d have to think very hard to name another player who got out this many times to average balls. If anything, I’m happy he comes down the order. Sure he can open if he wants to, not that it really matters. But seeing him come 6-7 down, you already know the match is mostly gone. It doesn’t hurt that match when he gets out to a stupid shot.
out of those three afridi is the only pure specialist batsman. jaisurya took up batting for hard hitting only, otherwise he was a tailender.
waseem is understandable as everytime he had to come for bat the match was on critical stage.

Koi nahi, badnam honge tou kya naam na hoga.
Yes a tailender who has scored 30+ Hundreds and more than 10000 runs in international cricket
I kind of agree with superman. If Afridi will continue to play and have all these batting expectations from him...I would send him to open the innings with Hafeez. Let him do his thing and see where that goes. Coming at 6 down just means more disappointment cuz Pakistan expects him to win the game.. even though most realize he is now a bowler more than a batter.
You got it wrong, Kaka. Akram was a natural athlete who was good at whatever he did. Jayasuriya was a dashing opener, who could spin a ball, and Afridi is a strongman who can power his way through, um, stuff. All three all rounders, Akram and Afridi, bowling and Sanath of the batting variety. I never once saw Jayasuriya as a tail ender who got promoted at the top. He was as good a batsmen as they come.
Over 13,000 runs, fastest 50, 28 hundreds (plus another 14 in tests, for a total of 42 international hundreds), 323 ODI wickets in 445 one days is no mean feat for someone. No wonder, Glenn McGrath included Sanath Jayasuriya in his list of eleven toughest batsmen he bowled to.
True enough. :k: The thing with Afridi is to keep batting expectations at the absolute lowest. Let him do his shtick, if it comes off good, if it doesn’t no harm done. He can open it if he wants, or come down the innings, it’s not like he can be controlled. Maybe Whatmore will try something different.
Dont even get me started on this one…not only he lost games because of his own brand but also to make sure that other captain(s), those junior to him didnt get the glories/victories that they were working hard to get.
