Afghan troops have torn down part of a new anti-Taleban fence being erected by Pakistan on the border between the two countries, officials in Kabul say.

They say the move led to fighting between Afghan and Pakistani troops. But Pakistan has denied the fence claim, saying the clashes started after one of its patrols came under fire.It was the first such fighting since Pakistan announced plans earlier this year to fence and mine sections of the border to restrict Taleban fighters. The Afghan government says the plan will endanger civilian lives and separate Pashtun tribes and families. The Afghan defence ministry said in a statement that the fighting took place between the Afghan border town of Shkin and Angoor Adda in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

The Afghan government has been strongly opposed to Pakistani plans to build the fence, because** it argues that such a move would make the disputed border between the two countries become a permanent boundary.**“Today at 9:30 am (0500 GMT) the Afghan army moved to the area and removed the fence,” the defence ministry statement said. “Pakistani troops fired on our forces, and the Afghan army returned fire.”

It said that Afghan forces arrived in the area on Tuesday, after which Pakistani troops immediately stopped work on the barbed wire fence and pulled back. “But unfortunately, taking advantage of the darkness of the night, the Pakistani forces again erected fences overnight Wednesday,” the statement said. But the Pakistani military spokesman, Gen Waheed Arshad, told the BBC that the clashes were unconnected with the fence, which in any case was deep inside Pakistani territory. Gen Arshad said the fighting began after a Pakistani border patrol came under an unprovoked attack by Afghan forces. There have been no injuries in the fighting reported by either side.

‘Deep concern’
Islamabad says it has no choice but to fence sections of the mountainous 2,640km-long border if it is to comply with repeated calls by the international community to stop Taleban insurgents based in Pakistan from mounting attacks inside Afghanistan. The Afghan government says it has begun diplomatic efforts to stop Pakistan from fencing the border. It has also written to the head of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, to express “deep concern”. Afghanistan argues that the border between the two countries - known as the Durand Line - is disputed because it cuts off part of its territory. The Durand Line was drawn up in 1893 by British India, which once included Pakistan, to divide powerful Pashtun tribes. The BBC’s M Ilyas Khan in Karachi says few expect Pakistan’s fence plan to stop Taleban movement. But the measures might help ease pressure on Pakistan from the US, Nato and the UN who want it to do more to curb militant attacks in Afghanistan, he says.

Pakistan has done nothing for Afghans except squeeze every drop of their blood. The Durand line is history. Peshawar is Afghan.

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

^ Ya that's why 4 million Afghans became a burden on Pakistani economy for the last 25 years.

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

The next time the Afghans try and pick a fight with us, I hope we give them what they deserve. With the heavy artillery recently moved into the area due to the recent fighting, I'm sure some ordnance sent Afghanistan's way would help.

Getting plastered by some 122mm artillery fire might teach Afghanistan's soldiers a lesson on who not to mess with.

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

*Yeah Kabul, Herat and Mazar-e- sharif are part of Pakistan too. But then why do we want that deprived, hunger stricken piece of crap anyways. Remember Pakistan has the capability to annex that wasteland if it desires to do so. *

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

What the fk do they need all that arid land for anyway? They've got tons of it yet we have to support their 4+ unskilled refugees in the name of 'brotherhood." We have been suffering at the hand of Afghanis for too long. Time to give them a boot. They can establish whatever kind of mullah-cracy they want within their own country. Fence the border and kick the ones in Pakistan back to where they came from so they can go back to opium growing Islamic ways.

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

oh the refugees dont wan to go back to that dump, read what they have to say.

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

Afghan troops did get blasted by Pakistani troops, and then they soon stopped tampering with the newly built fence.

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

wait - they have a army? I thought all Afgan had was US marines around kabul.

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

Unfortunately no government has done anything to solve this problem. Most who suffered from these Afghans are smaller provinces. In NWFP and Balochistan they own more businesses than native people, and in Karachi they steal electricity and God knows what.

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

How can there be anything in common between Pathans of Iranian stock raised in the martial spirit and desis?

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

Both kinds are producing Islamic terrorists these days.

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

Language Dear Ponjabis!

If Afghans do such things at a time when they are considered to be among the poorest and most weak, then imagine what we could do when strong, what do you guys think? :D

Just wait to the point when we have organized army, or forget it, we don't even need trained soldiers to fight the Pakistani army, we should send off a couple of Pashtun Tribesmen....or forget it...hahahahaha, Pakistani army is not even worth a laugh!

Re: AFGHANISTAN STOP CREATING PROBLEMS FOR PAKISTAN

Pakistan, the epicentre of terrorism, coz of Pakistan, Pashtuns are now facing all these problems and have been labeled militants, terrorists, extremists and what not.
