They will all flee to Quetta, helping it become the first city in the world to reach 100 million.

Re: Afghanistan still messed up

More of this.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – A suspected Taliban commander responsible for roadside bomb attacks on Afghan and U.S.-led coalition troops has been arrested in southern Afghanistan, an Afghan commander said Thursday.

Re: Afghanistan still messed up

Gosh after 30 years of war Afghanistan is “still messed up”? Now there is a shocker.

Perhaps we should read my “good News from Afghanistan” thread, which takes lots of news bits, not just one headline.

Re: Afghanistan still messed up

Considering the good news Afghanistan thread lacks anything of substance i will refrain on commenting on it. When Afghanistan gets running water to atleast 3 of its major cities that is when i will say there is good news. Till then women are not being educated all over the country. People are not being paid and employment is not being generated and the Taliban still remain.

Re: Afghanistan still messed up

  1. 600 gathered and 2 days ago the very same Taliban killed 2 american soliders. Wow. That historical meeting really had an affect on the taliban and Omar’s supporters.

  2. Afghan democracy is maturing? Since when do they have anything that resembles a functioning govt? You need the institutions before they can mature. They don’t even control the whole country

  3. So let me get this straight they are good taliban and bad taliban now? Talk about retard. Next you guys will say Dostom deserves the noble peace prize

  4. USAID and NED giving awards is not a bloody achievement. It is purely political.

  5. Women only gyms? Women only hours? Why society is still segregated. Are women still in the burqa?

Re: Afghanistan still messed up

Over 50,000 Afghan refugees return home

IANS SUNDAY, MAY 08, 2005 07:27:51 PM ]

KABUL: Over 50,000 Afghan refugees have returned home from Pakistan since the resumption of UN-assisted repatriation programme in March.

“A total of 55,065 Afghans have returned home over the past two months with UNHCR assistance,” Ariane Quentier, spokesperson of UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, said.

The voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees from Pakistan with the support of UN High Commissioner for Refugees was resumed March 7 and the agency expects to help repatriate 400,000 Afghans by the end of 2005, said Quentier.

More than three million Afghans have returned home since the collapse of the Taliban regime in late 2001 with majority of them returning from neighbouring Pakistan and Iran while the same number is still living abroad.

Read the fact about IDP. They have increased due to the fighting. Additionally nobody is keeping track of how many people are leaving due to the increased fighting.

There were/are 3 million Afghan refugees in Pak since the soviet invasion and after more than 3 million repatriated there are still 3 million in Pak… How very strange.

Pakistan

Millions of Afghans fled to Pakistan during the Soviet Union’s occupation of their country in the 1980s and during a civil war in the 1990s. More poured across the border prior to the fall of the Taliban in 2001. Although the exact number of refugees in Pakistan is not known, the government estimates close to three million Afghans live throughout the country. Of those, approximately 1.2 million live in refugee camps consisting of mud-walled huts surrounded by rubbish-strewn dirt streets. Despite the squalor, many refugees are reluctant to return to Afghanistan where the economic conditions and security issues they would face are far worse. Severe winter weather in recent weeks bringing heavy rains and snowfall has exacerbated the suffering of Afghan refugees. In Northern Pakistan, flooding, landslides and avalanches have affected an estimated 2.8 million inhabitants.
