So I was readin this article in the Op/Ed section of Daily news..I’m not able to post th entire article, but here’s a short synopsis, as I understand the situation to be.
Natalie Healy lost her Navy SEAL son, an only child, was killed in Afghanistan while the helicopter he was flying in was attacked allegedly by thE taliban.
Sayed Rahamatullah Hashemi has, in the past, sympathized with th Taliban, and has now applied for full time admission into Yale University. Supposedly even he was stunned that he gained admission into the school and the article also says he will not talk about an essay he wrote about Israel being th AMerican Al-Qaeda. He admits he did not do well in his “Terrorism: Past Present and Future” class because of the clear biases in the textbooks.
Healy suggests that Guantanamo would be a better alternative for his ilk, and insists that Ivy League leaders are hypocrites, supporting th enemy by educating them.
I don’t know much about Hashemi, but from what she wrote, I feel she is taking it a tad too far. I sympathize wiht her in that she went through what no mother should ever have to go through, th death of a child, but to fight to deny someone education because of their cultural/religious background, seems very ridiculous.
What about all the parents, offspring, and siblings who have lost someone or their entire families due to the occupation to rid the nation of bad regimes, but instead have lost their innocent loved ones?
How is bombing a nation justified, which results in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians? Should the liberators not be using other means of capturing and getting rid of bad guys than to bomb an entire nation?
Yes, it's unfortunate that her son died, but she shouldn't forget about the parents who have also lost their infants and grown up sons and daughters due to the mass bombing, shooting, and other such war tactics that are used in occupied countries.
Don't the parents in occupied nations have a reason to hate and malign the 'liberators' just as much as she has the right to hate them?
of course its gonna piss people off because regular citizens of muslim countries like pakistan have to go through tough background checks, which at times take upto 3 months, to obtain US visas. ppl on student visas in US have to go through registration evertime they cross the border. Phones get tapped at will. Ppl here have had interviews with FBI. Ppl with muslim backgrounds can't even board planes before getting cleared from DHS. AND then u find a taliban minister in the US on a student visa. ummm hello...what happened to your database of suspected terrorists!!!!!
whats the use of having registration, background checks and other such measures when you are going to issue a student visa to a taliban minister!!!
I told my employer up front that I wont go the USA (it was a one day trip - related to some equipment we are buying from an american manufacturer), because for spending about 8 hours inside the US, I would have to go through 4 hours of humiliating body searches and checks and other BS … not to mention that I would have to declare the exact hair count on my body as well - when I go to apply for a visa - apart from the usual (NORMAL) stuff , for example, the name of the headmaster of the school that my father attended in 1951, etc etc.
i don’t really agree with this. there are no humiliating body searches and it doesn’t take 4 hours. i cross the border often, and i feel no shame in having to register (finger print and photograph) every single time. cuz i realize that its their country, and they r responsible for its security.
i’m just saying that how come average citizens, with no links to taliban or al qaida or extremism have to go through tough restrictions, yet a taliban minister is in this country on a student visa studying at Yale.
I am not against the background checks and registration procedures. I am willing to abide by all laws and restrictions they put in place to make their country secure. BUT you have to implement the restrictions properly.
erM me and my mom alwyas get searched.. she wears a burka.. neither of us ever feel humiliated, buss aik masla, I start laughing coz the rubdown tickles
well - for different ppl it has different meaning and different interpretation
Mostly - It has been globally accepted now and isnt even considered a nuisance
Overall it turns into a really comical situation when a minister or even a prime minister from a country that is America’s best friend in the war against Terrorism, has to take his shoes off (along with everything else )at the immigration counter even when he is an officially invited guest at the Whitehouse
In that scenario the case that you have quoted sounds a bit fishy
Well like i said above, i wasnt sure xactly who/what Hashemi was... just another Afghani who sympathized and liked th Taliban, and hated Israel etc (in that case, half of gupshup shud have hteir US college degrees taken away :p), but since someone said he was actually IN the taliban.. I dunno.. Ijust think the woman is going overboard and is takin her frustrations out on Hashemi..
it's not like he was some Afghan with alleged links to possible Taliban affiliates....he was the official spokesperson of the Taliban.
the Taliban unabashedly harbored the terrorist masterminds of the biggest terrorist attack in the U.S, and consciously allowed dozens of comprehensive al-Qaeda training camps to operate.
by any measure of law, this qualifies the regime as an enemy regime, despite not directly attacking the US. as a result, a member of the regime would be classified as an enemy.
Syed Rahmatullah Hashemi was a certified enemy of the state.
it is perfectly logical to be angered that an enemy of the state is attending one of the most prestigious univerisities in the world...on an automatic ticket no less.
personally, from what i've read about him...he seems like a decent guy who at least vocally condemns the Taliban and regrets his involvement. I kind of felt bad for him and his situation. Of course, he really doesn't have the option of saying anything else, so it could be a lie.
Exactly! I have no sympathy for the death of an American Soldier (aka, terrorist) in Iraq or Afghanistan. That lady can cry a river, I wouldn’t give a damn. When the American death toll reaches 100,000, then maybe I’ll shed a tear.
