Afghan reality: India may talk to ISI and Taliban

New Delhi: The top levels of the government are debating opening talks with Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Afghan Taliban to ensure India remains relevant in Afghanistan.

CNN-IBN learns the precarious security situation in Afghanistan–highlighted by the terrorist attacks targeting Indians in Kabul on February 26–is prompting a gradual but significant rethink in New Delhi.

Sources confirm that the government is debating opening up a channel of communication with the ISI and engaging sections of the Taliban–an idea India abhorred till now.

India is also considering paring down its presence at reconstruction projects in Afghanistan. Projects underway may be wrapped up quickly and there may be even a freeze on undertaking new projects.

These policy options were debated at a meeting of the National Security Council, which Prime Minister Manmohan Singh chaired on February 12.

The government has been forced to think to rethink its Afghanistan policy because of cold, hard reality. Indian officials acknowledge that the political and military situation has deteriorated in Afghanistan.

President Hamid Karzai is politically weak and Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar and his men could return to power in Kabul. Security analysts perceive Western powers have lost their will to stay in Afghanistan, and there’s a tremendous increase in Pakistan confidence.

The advice to engage with sections of the Taliban and start a limited and regulated dialogue with the ISI came from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The advice is controversial but stems from India’s need to ensure Afghanistan is not handed over on a platter to Pakistan. In line with that thinking, India is also considering helping prop up a friendly political alliance and intensively engage with Russia and Iran.

Not everyone is convinced about India’s new Afghanistan policy. “It’s not the same Afghanistan–there’s no Ahmad Shah Masood. It’s not the same old Iran either. It’s also not the old Soviet Union. We now have Russia and the Central Asian States, so we need a new way. What that will be, we don’t know,” says former diplomat K C Singh.

Indian officials say there may be a change of approach but India remains determined to stay relevant in Afghanistan.

Afghan reality: India may talk to ISI, Taliban

:hehe: So much for Indian “bravado”. Or as my esteemed friend said in another thread

The reality of the matter is, India has never really been given the front row seats when it comes to Afghanistan. USA created a likeable illusion for India to believe, so it could construct roads. India being seated in London (3rd row at that), and being totally left out of considerable measures in a conference held in Turkey is living proof that Nato/US and the countries that matter realize what little or no role India has as far as Afghanistan is concerned.

Pakistan has been elevated to a level of utmost importance for regional peace, because it is truly the only nation that could quel Afghanistan and give Nato/US forces a face-saving exit, if Afghani people choose to do so.

One can only hope that India will get off its high horse of helium-filled balloon and return to the negotiations table with Pakistan having realized its true place in the scheme of things.

Re: Afghan reality: India may talk to ISI and Taliban

It is matter of Billions of Dollars India spent in Afghanistan despite the hunger, unemployment and crisis ( financial) going on in India... now when the table has turned and India is sensing that they put their money on wrong horse ( as usual) so they are looking for all the options to get some role in the future Afghan scenario... These Indian Idiots doesn't know that all they have to do is to resolve the out-standing regional issues with Pakistan and then ease up the relationship, everything else will fall into its place... there will be more trade and other economic activities.. there will be less spending on arms and weapons ( bad news for politicians and commission agents along with arms selling nations)... common man will prosper... but this simple notion is way to difficult for India to understand...

Re: Afghan reality: India may talk to ISI and Taliban

LMAO! Like I have been saying for years. Pakistan is not going down. You consider us down for the count and we come back up like a whirlwind!

India wants to be relevant to South Asia and the world? They need to give the Kashmiri people the right to self-determination.

Re: Afghan reality: India may talk to ISI and Taliban

the caption of this thread is hilarious.
india taking with ISI and Taliban would be same as monkey telling that he may talk to Lion and Snake.
India has no business in Afghanistan other than mischief.

Bingo.

I do see Indian involvement in Afghanistan as nothing but opening up a rear flank for Pakistan.

So I understand that India is a monkey, but who is the lion and the snake :D

Re: Afghan reality: India may talk to ISI and Taliban

lion is Pakistan.

no one is willing to tolerate indian in this region i.e central asia cause every one knows they have strong ties with the zionist israel.

Re: Afghan reality: India may talk to ISI and Taliban

This is just $tupid @$$ news heading from the Indian bhonpoos.

How on earth Indians want to talk to ISI. Is that a separate organization? Heck no. It is simply the intelligence wing of Pak government, and specifically run by one of the Pak government's branch aka Pak army.

Do you think Pakistanis would make a statement like "We need to negotiate with RAW". That will be just a raw raw BS and nothing else.

The other part about India talking to Talibotics. Well sure, every other Tom, Dick and harry are talking to the Talibots, and so could Indians.

However this may not go well with Uzbeks and Tajiks in Afghanistan. And India may lose their support.
