KABUL (AFP) - Afghanistan’s intelligence agency on Wednesday accused its Pakistani counterpart, ISI, of masterminding an assassination bid on President Hamid Karzai in April.

The US-backed Karzai survived the April 27 attack at the annual military parade, but three Afghans were killed, one of them a parliamentarian.

Sayed Ansari, spokesman for the national intelligence agency, said his organisation believed Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence was involved.

“The investigations, the documents we found and the confession of suspects arrested show the real schemer and organiser … of the terrorist attack is the intelligence agency of Pakistan, the ISI,” Ansari told reporters.

The statement came a day after Karzai’s spokesman made a similar accusation.

“Evidence shows the hallmark of a particular foreign intelligence agency which we believe was behind this attack,” Karzai’s spokesman, Homayun Hamidzada, said Tuesday, citing an investigation into the incident.

He refused to name the foreign country or the spy organisation.

However, Ansari claimed cell phones seized from the rebels involved in the attack showed the militants had “constant contacts” with bases across the border with Pakistan.

The spokesman said eight of the 16 people arrested over suspected links to the attackers were government employees. He did not give details, but authorities had earlier said a defence ministry weapons expert and a police nurse were arrested for allegedly facilitating the attack.

Islamabad denies that its intelligence agencies have links to the insurgents.

with all goings on considered it is possible ISI were behined this attack to some degree

its just that the karzai/us combo seem always to be keeping some kind of distance from pakistan immaterial of pak efforts. which suggests they have ill wishes towards pakistan. isi will be well aware of these 'ill wishes'

Afghanistan now has intelligence too? What do they operate out of? Mudshacks? Perhaps they use donkeys to commute on super-secret missions.

Not one substantive argument as to why ISI couldn't have been involved. On top of that all that venemous ridicule about Karzai and Afghanistan sucking up to the USA when your own president/coas blazed new trails in that department.

I agree to the fact that like other institutes, quality of ISI has been de-graded lately, but even at its all time low level, it will not take Karzai down, infact i think, ISI will provide all kind of protection to Karzai, as he is the only ally of Pakistan in Afghan Govt.

Bear in mind that Karzai, lacks skills of leadership, hence is not able to deliver what USA and India wants from him. If he is gone, then they might put a right person in place and Pakistan had to deal with him.

Unless and otherwise, I think, 97% of Afghan population, Army and other law enforcing agencies are on the payroll of ISI, thats why Karzai do not trust them and had US soldeirs to guard him.

May Allah give Karzai a long life ( ofcourse as a head of Afghan govt)
