and women in afghanistan were better off before the war ??

lol...the same old story...get naked, get famous... :)

May be OIC can have their own beauty contest without any exposure. Or will that become a tayloring contest?

The Afghan people reply:

KABUL (AFP) - President Hamid Karzai’s minister for women’s affairs CONDEMNED Miss Afghanistan, as Vida Samadzai became the country’s first woman in the post-Taliban era to appear in a bikini during a beauty contest in Manila.

“Appearing naked before a camera or television is not women’s freedom but in my opinion is to entertain men,” minister Habiba Surabi told AFP on Sunday.

“We condemn Vida Samadzai, she is not representing Afghanistan’s women, and this is not women’s freedom.”

Surabi said according to Afghan culture women should not demonstrate their worth using their “beauty or bodies” but by their skills and knowledge.

“In the name of women’s freedom, what this Afghan girl has done is not freedom but is lascivious,” the minister said.

The 25-year-old Afghan contestant, who lives in the United States, is the first Afghan woman in 30 years to participate in the Miss World (news - web sites) international beauty contest being held in the Philippines capital this week.

The dark-haired, black-eyed Samadzai, apparently from a Pashtun tribe, was born and raised in Afghanistan but left for the United States in 1996 to escape the extremist Taliban regime which forced women to cover themselves from head to toe.

Under the harsh regime women were not allowed to work outside their homes or go out without a close relative beside them. After the fall of the militia in 2001, an increasing number of women left the burqa, or veil, at home and some took jobs.

The only other Miss Afghanistan was Zohra Daoud, who jointed the Miss Universe (news - web sites) contest in 1972.

Beauty pagents are funny things. Some people (MAtsui?). Would have you beleive that they empower/liberate woman as opposed to those evil mullahs who are opposed to parading woman half naked on a stage to be stared at by strangers. Do you honestly think anyone in the crowd gives a sh!t about the girls intelligence/personality/character. All anyone cares about is how she fills out a bikini. I can't imagine anything more degrading to subject someone too.
To me it seems more opressive that what those terrible muslims do.

No beauty queen in my eyes.

hm.

It's so ironic that some individuals here actually believe this represents "liberation", when we still have warlords running the show in Afghanistan (outside of the 25km radius from Karzai's office). Seems like there will be a beauty pageant contestant from every country that has been (or will be) "liberated" - pretty soon, there'll be a Miss Iraq, Miss Iran, Miss Sudan... who knows, maybe a Miss Saudi Arabia one day as well. What a stupid joke. Education is liberation, knowledge is liberation, equal rights are liberation, retaining your financial income and disposing of it as you decide, - that's liberation.
Call this issue by any other name, that's fine, but it definitely is not - IMHO - genuine liberation.

she needs to put on some weight

btw YANKEES LOST hahahahhahahahahhaha yayyyyy

She's plain ugly. I agree with the person who said that she shouldn't be representing Afghanistan. This is ridiculous.

Mats, Why is modesty degrading to you? It's the muslim culture and it makes total sense, like it or not. If you really want to talk about degradation, let's talk about bottling cow urine and saying it's a gift from the "Gods". Does that ring a bell?

Oh you're so not with it Spock - you need a day off to browse the ladies' lingerie dept. Just don't get short circuited.;)

:k: well put

Its not only muslims who find pagaents degrading to women. Plenty of Christian, Hindus, and people of other faiths do as well.

I agree with you Nadia.

Nadz babes, i agree with you. She does not represent Afghanistan, only Bush and Blair..bet its makes them think they've achieved a lot if a woman can parade around in a bikini rather than a burkha. Pity they chose such a minger :p

:rotfl:

SERIOUSLY THOUGH, RELIGION ASIDE.. WHY WOULD ANY WOMAN WANT TO PARADE AROUND SO THAT PEOPLE COULD JUDGE HER LIKE A PIECE OF GHOSHT?

Anyone who needs to show skin obviously doesnt think she can make it on her intelligence and skill and intellect. She's relying on what was passed to her genetically..or maybe plastic-surgically , not sth she herself cultivated...

Why am I not surprised

Miss Afghanistan wins special award in Miss Earth pageant
(AFP)

10 November 2003

MANILA - Denounced and all but disowned by her country of birth, Miss Afghanistan Vida Samadzai has won a special award at an international beauty contest held in the Philippines.

Samadzai, 23, the first Afghan woman in the post-Taliban era to appear in public in a bikini, won the special award “Miss Earth Beauties for a Cause” here late Sunday, organizers told AFP.

Miss Honduras, 25 year-old Dania Prince, bested Samadzai and 55 other contestants and was crowned Miss Earth 2003.

Samadzai, who lives in the United States, is the first Afghan woman in 30 years to take part in the Miss World contest. The previous Afghan titlist, Zohra Daoud, fled to the United States after the 1979 Soviet invasion.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s minister for women’s affairs last month condemned Samadzai, a dark-haired, black-eyed beauty after the woman’s picture in a two-piece red bikini landed in the international press.

“Appearing naked before a camera or television is not women’s freedom but in my opinion is to entertain men,” Minister Habiba Surabi said. “We condemn Vida Samadzai, she is not representing Afghanistan’s women, and this is not women’s freedom.”

Surabi said according to Afghan culture women should not demonstrate their worth using their “beauty or bodies” but by their skills and knowledge.

Founded in 2001, the Miss Earth pageant styles itself as “a vehicle in promoting environmental advocacy worldwide”. Previous winners promoted projects and events to preserve the environment, the organizers said in a statement.

:-)

Actually from a commercial point of view, the whole commotion makes sense. These girls are all pretty ordinairy looking and without stunts like 'Miss Afghanistan' we wouldn't probably have paid a blind bit of notice to this competition.

re her point in bold there is no need to expose ur self to show ur beauty… keep within the hadd of islam but thats askin for too much obviously and i agree with dhulfikar’s commnets well said brov’ & shame on u :mad3: afghani women turned another western mishap’
