Guys, i need serious advice. Let me put things into perspective first. I graduated last year in law, so basically all i have to my name right now is a law degree, i have never worked and now i want to start applying for jobs and it’s so tough and confusing.
I want to delve straight into para-legal work and in that way i’ll be gaining experience in the field i seek to enter and Inshallah if i get a good law firm behind me and prove my self i can get funding for the Legal Practice Course ( LPC ) which all Solicitors in England and Wales have to do. So it’ll be a good stepping stone for me but the problem is i have no experience and it’s making me hesitate in applying.
So now i’m in three minds. I don’t know whether i should put the para-legal idea on a back burner for a while and just do voluntary work experience in courts and law firms alike to build myself a better CV and THEN apply for para-legal positions
OR
just go for it. At the end of the day the worst they can do is refuse?
AND
The third headache is i’ll be moving to Denmark after i’m married in a year or so’s time. Coming to think of it, it means that even if i do the LPC in England it will not be recognised there and i’ll have to take additional exams !! Sheeesh. So should i even bother striving for para-legal work when it might not add upto nothing at all. I could just work in some poxy retail store for a year and think about career building once i’m in Denmark but anyhows i don’t know so tell me.
What sounds like the best thing to do? If you have any novel ideas please share. Thanks
I've learned from experience that you should not rule things out just because in a year or so you are not planning to be where you are. Therefore if you like the legal field, I would suggest you try for the paralegal position. If it pays, even better. Go for it.
I think you should do the paralegal work. At the end of the day, it is experience in working in a legal environment.
A very good friend of mine graduated from Essex University in Law a few years ago. He opted to go to the Netherlands and Germany to obtain a PhD in law. While there, he is doing part-time work in German law firms. He is gaining valuable knowledge and experience. He is now applying for permanent jobs in the London, UK area. I think the fact that he has experience in another European country will be a benefit, even though the laws are different in Germany/Netherlands than in England.
Similarly for you, you will be gaining valuable experience in British law if you do some para-legal work. I think at the end of the day when you are in Denmark, it will be a definite asset.
Anyway, I will ask this same friend what you should do. :)
Do you intend to work after you get married? If so you might want to consider spending time learning dutch (or whatever they speak in denmark!), that way you can take any exams etc to allow you to work in the legal field one you move out there.
^ Dutch is spoken in Holland. The language of Denmark is called Danish.
DD, regarding your question:
I also think you should go for that para-legal position. Even if you think that you can’t utilize it 1:1, once you are in Denmark, at least you will have some working experience. And that does count a lot.
